Does anyone use occupancy detection or have any experience with it? Looks like something that Panel Pro would be good for.

Speaking as one of the JMRI developers, don't look at installing Occupancy detection just as a means to find something you can use PanelPro for.

The question you have to ask yourself is what application do you want to have occupancy detection installed on your layout for.

Here are the most common applications we see where detection plays an important role:

    Signaling
Automatic Train Running (both on visible and hidden portions of the layout)
Dispatching (which ties in with signaling, but you can do signaling without a dispatcher).

Once you have determined what application you're using, the next thing you have to determine is what type of detection od you want. Generally speaking, there are two types of detection - Current Detection (which detects a current moving through the rails) and optical (some variation on the theme of the train breaks a beam of light). There are drawbacks and advantages to both systems, and the particular application you're looking at may make one more suitable than another.

I think your right Paul. Watching my trains go around a laptop screen does seem uesless. I can't justify the need or the hassle. Thanks for the reality check!
