This map appeared in the random photo feed at the top of the forums page. No information accompanied it: This is unknown mapping data for me, but it appears to be quite detailed. There appears to be an unfinished or abandoned roadbed arcing through the center with what appears to be uncompleted cuts and possibly tunnel portal cuts. Does anyone know about this map? Items such as: * Map data used. * Latitude/Longitude * Historical footnotes on what we're seeing? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks. Andre
Hi, Andre! The I-44 spur in the upper right is the road to the gate at Ft. Leonard Wood. I don't know lat/long, but you should be able to find them using Google Maps. And, yes, there was an unfinished tunnel there as the original plan for the Southwest Pacific was to follow the low-lying ground along the rivers rather than climb Dixon Hill. But the money for the tunnels and bridges wasn't available, so they switched to climbing hills with the plan to go back to the low ground later. The $$$ never materialized--too many bankruptcies-- so the only use made of that original survey was to build the line to Ft. Wood for WW II on it. Side note: I am almost finished painting the C-420 A&M shell. I hope to begin reassembly soon.
Thanks palallin! I found it. This link should take you to an online topo service and the right of way can be discerned: https://caltopo.com/map.html#ll=37.79747,-92.15472&z=16&b=t&o=f16a,r&n=1,0.25 Oddly, I see no active railroad for several miles. Almost as if the that portion was isolated from the rail network.
