What thinner do you guys like using for airbrushing the "new" (*) Floquil paints? What works best?

    Thanks.

(*) Not the old mixed xylene based Floquil system, which was used up until a few years ago. I gave up spraying that long ago - too dangerous to body and soul!

The new Flouquil thinner is Testors Universal Enamel Thinner. It comes in a red 8 oz can and retails for about $9. It is also a thinner for Testors, Aztec and Model Master paints. It is a little pricey so I wait for the 40% off coupons at Hobby Lobby to make it a little more affordable.

My main use for Flouquil paints is weathering and concrete colors so I don't use lots of the Universal Thinner. I like Scalecoat II for the big jobs and have figured out how to get a smooth, shiney coat.

BTW the Universal thinner will smell different but works the same as the old Flouquil thinner.

Good luck and let us see photos of what you are painting.

    One additional thought .. . . . . ..

A local KC modeler recommended mineral spirits as a Floquil thinner. I tried it and the paint was tacky for days and days and days. Heck, it's probably still tacky and I painted the car months ago. So use mineral spirits with caution and on test material first.

I only use mineral spirits to clean my airbrush.

    Rick -

Thanks. I've not tried mineral spirits, and won't!

I did buy a can of the Testors "universal" solvent. You are right - they value that stuff highly!

I haven't bought any Floquil for a long time, but I used to use lacquer thinner.
In fact, for a while I would mix Floquil color with clear lacquer and spray it. Worked just fine, but I'm sure by now the EPA has gotten their nose under the tent and made them take all the good stuff out of it.
