Hey Y'all, Here is my first attempt at designing a 36' Double Sheathed all wood boxcar. The color of the car would be Boxcar Red. Lettering will be white. The coon skin would be black and white. What do y'all think? Manny Oh, Yes the saying is an actual Texas saying!
Are you trying to realisticly freelance? (I call it "proto-lancing".) OR, just wanting to have fun with your model trains? If the latter... looks good! Have fun! If the former, lose the slogan. "Cutesy" will get very old after a while. Andre
Going to scratch together an early boxcar? Now you're talking good stuff! I once did some Civil War era cars: a boxcar, gondola and flatcar but not exactly award winning quality and I used styrene (shame on me, shoulda used wood). Tell us your approach. I figure you'll be using RTR trucks and brake wheels but are you going to build your own underframe? The big thing keeping me from doing early Frisco stuff is getting decals. Please do a photo clinic of this project! I really like your plans so far. Ought to be real nice.
Jim, The boxcar will either be a 36' Roundhouse Old Timer, or it will be a resin car that my great friend Tony makes. The Ventilated Boxcar will be a Concor shell, but will have a brand new resin underframe. Many detail parts will go into them. The cars will have truss rod under frames and K brakes. The trucks will be Kadee 551 Arch Bar and the couplers will be Kadee 158 Whiskers. The cars will be painted with Scalecoat II. I'll have to have the decals made up. I'll do threads on them when I make them up. No worries there. Be prepared because Frisco.org is about to get flooded with the Frisco impact on the Texas Hill Country! Yeehaw!
To the best of my knowledge, the reporting marks, capy, etc. go on the left side of the car, and the coonskin goes on the right, I believe that is ARR and ICC regulations. Otherwise looks good to me.
All of the photos of boxcars that I have are from the 30's onward and they all have the coon on the left above the SL-SF and number reporting marks. Tony
I am modeling pre-1920, so the heralds were mixed back then. I'm redesigning the boxcar and the ventilated car to be more uniform. The slogan on the boxcar is disappearing. After thinking about it, I've realized that the slogan just doesn't fit.
