Does anyone on the list know if this caboose survived the recent tornado that virtually leveled Pitcher?

Also, is it the same one that was at the little mining museum on the main road through town that had the extended vision canopy slipped over the top of it?

Edit 5/14/2024: There were two Frisco bay window cabooses in Picher, OK. The caboose in the first post was at a private residence.

The caboose in the first post is not the caboose that was at the mining museum. The caboose at the mining museum was in a parking lot and painted in that successor railroad green and yellow.

Added clarification that there were two cabooses in Picher, OK.

It is still there as of last week.

By the way, the Southwestern Missouri (SWM) Railroad interurban depot will probably be demolished within the next week or two, at Picher.

    Bill,

Thank you for the post here and on the thread for the Picher, OK depot.

Is the pending demolition of the SWM depot from tornado damage or Superfund site work?

Also, do you know the current status of the Frisco caboose at the mining museum in Picher?

Are they facing the same fate, demolition or relocation, from tornado damage or as part of the Superfund site clean up?

    Thanks!

    Mark and all,

The caboose shown in the above photograph is still on location next to the house in the picture and it looks like someone is living in it.

The mining museum was closed and its material given to the Baxter Springs, Kansas museum and the Axe Library. Special Collections Department, Pittsburg State University, Pittsburg, Kansas.

The museum building is slated for demolition as part of the Superfund cleanup.

The caboose the museum owned was sold and scrapped.

Edit 5/14/2024: The caboose at the former Pitcher Mining Field Museum was sold but it was not scrapped.

Caboose SLSF 1735 was sold to a youth camp in northeast Oklahoma.

The current address of the caboose is 5 Mile Camp, 2201 South 680 Road, Quapaw, OK 74363.

Updated status of the former mining museum caboose and its current location.
