Athearn has announced a Frisco pulpwood flat car with numbers 5028, 5098, and 5122 with a usage date of 1965+. Reservations due 3-27-15 with a delivery date of 12-15. I would like to know if this is an accurate car as the cars in Molo's book in that number range are different. I am wondering if the 1965+ date does indicate a later pulpwood flat that this model replicates. I can't find any pictures, yet, to indicate that it does. Anybody know?

    Terry and All:

Since there are no pictures or at least I couldn't find any of the model, one could assume they are using the same mold as their recently announced derrick cars which I have pictured the undecorated one below. Hasn't the Atlas pulpwood car always been accepted as being fairly prototypical?

It looks like these could be a re-release of a previous Athearn Bluebox 40' Pulpwood flat car but as a Ready to Roll model. They are listed as 40' cars.

The Atlas car is a GSC 42' pulpwood flat, which the Frisco did own.

I found a picture of one of the RTR cars in the first run. It sure looks like the Bluebox car.

Keith, the Atlas car is different from this Athearn car because the Atlas bulkhead is of the open type while the Athearn bulkhead is closed. I would like to buy a couple of the Athearn cars if we can learn that it is a accurate or at least close model of an actual Frisco car. If the number series is incorrect, that is something that can be fixed. However, if the Frisco did not own anything like this car, then I would pass on it.

The Kar Trak labels put a 1968-1975 date on the car, even though the labels remoained on some of the cars for decades after the system was abandoned.
