Here is a link to the Library of Congress for the depot at Aberdeen, MS. http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/ampage?collId=hhphoto&fileName=ms/ms0000/ms0045/photos/browse.db&action=browse&recNum=0&title2=Aberdeen Station, U.S. Route 45, Aberdeen, Monroe, MS&displayType=1&itemLink=D?hh:6:./temp/~ammem_lCRc:: A nice interior photograph as well as drawings.
Hmmm, works for me. Try this one. http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/ampag...playType=1&itemLink=D?hh:6:./temp/~ammem_lCRc:: I was still in it. Interesting in edit the url is a heck of a lot longer, but when I post it, it gets shortened.
&*&%$ computers. Go to http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/collections/habs_haer/hhquery.html Then type in St Louis San Francisco Railroad, then select "match all these words", then click on "Search". You get just 6 results.
Did you notice that the freight doors are hinged horizontally in the middle. I have never seen that before, most Frisco depots had the freight door hung on a overhead track, and the door rolled out of the way to one side of the opening. I do not understand how the freight door would work.
As usual, you are right, they are very weird. Also note the pad lock below the white box towards the center of the door. Hmmmm. The bottom half must of swung up, but then that box would be in the way. Very interesting.
Richard, I will have to double-check my notes, but I believe the freight doors on the Cape Girardeau passenger depot opened the same way. Maybe some of the River Division folk can confirm before I have a chance to do so. Best Regards,
Take a look at the picture a this link regarding the Cape Girardeau depot. http://www.frisco.org/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=8797&d=1250570347
Hey! It has Hutsons Furniture Store to the far right. That is a cool photograph. I plan to build a backdrop flat of that depot someday.
That little box on the freight door was the way bill box, usually they were mounted on the depot side next to the entrance door, not on the freight door. I would guess that the freight door was never opened again after the way bill box was mounted on it. Just a guess.
Indeed - seems that opening the freight door would have turned the waybill box to splinters. This waybill box appears to be wider than most Frisco "standard" boxes that I've seen. The top of the box also doesn't appear to have any pitch to it, or very little pitch. I have always assumed that waybill boxes had the pitched roof to keep water out, but the Aberdeen box looks to be fairly well sheltered. I find it interesting, too, that the size of the depot seems as if it would have warranted a more standard board-and-batten frame design, as opposed to a brick structure. Best Regards,
I think Cape was hoping to be more of a central hub when the depot was built but operations were moved to Chaffee instead. That could explain the fancy construction. Just a guess.
Does anyone know of any pictures of the station shack at Hamilton, MS? It did not seem to be much of a depot. I have a picture of it in a magazine article form the 1930s. Also I have pictures on all the old depot from Amory, MS to Pensacola, FL. The only other one I need is Cantonment, FL. Does anyone have or know where I could get a copy of one?
Railrider44, Would you please post them to this website. Those depots would be very interesting to see.
I will see what I can do. I will have to scan most of them, most of them are old postcard photographs. I work on the Amory to Pensacola line, just trying to get pictures of all the old depots.
The depot was still standing as of less than 5 months ago. https://www.google.com/maps/@33.822038,-88.516643,3a,75y,90t/data=!3m8!1e2!3m6!1s119667762!2e1!3e10!6s//lh3.googleusercontent.com/proxy/Sqw71QG4UvxmA5Lo3zHT5A0ciPWs-ChXon77S7e66un4jZ_PGroUfUfZn7j98qY8ZXQLgLDqSGe8BAA9z5gHYCmQ5MtQ8RrcSU4=w203-h135!7i4272!8i2848 I took my girls to see it at that time. It sits at what was known as East Aberdeen on the east side of the waterway where there was a wye with a spur into Aberdeen proper on the original line. When the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway was built, the Columbus Sub was relocated a little to the east and the track at the depot was abandoned.
