    Hello,

Can anyone tell me the assignments of the 44 tonners? I was looking at one of my Frisco books last night and it showed that one of these units was assigned to Wichita. Anyone know which unit number it was?

    Thanks,

    Larry :)

I pulled the four Arthur Johnson pics I have of the Frisco 44-ton critters to see where they were working when Art caught them:

SLSF 1 was at Newburg, MO - Aug 1949 (Davenport)
SLSF 2 was at Paris, TX - Sept 1952 (Davenport)
SLSF 3 was at Pensacola, FL - May, 1951 (Whitcomb)
SLSF 8 was at York, AL - Sept 1951 (GE)

Dr Lou Marre/John Harper's "FDP" has pics of these four also, but three of them were at other locations:

SLSF 1 was at Springfield, MO - Jan 1948
SLSF 2 was at Ft Smith, AR - Sep 1959
SLSF 3 was at Joplin, MO - Sep 1947
SLSF 8 (same shot I have above at York, AL)

plus SLSF 4 was at Paris, TX - May 1967 (GE)

There's a picture of #1 at Fort Smith 6-27-58, page 27 in Marre's Frisco Diesel Power.

    Larry and All:

If my memory serves me correctly, Lee Clerico may have taken a B&W photo of a 44 tonner at the old yard in downtown Wichita. Maybe Tony LaLumia can shed more light on this.

One would think that unless it was located at an elevator or some other industry, this would be a small horsepower locomotive to be used at a yard this large. I believe that in the steam era the power was an 0-6-0 switcher and pictures do exist to verify this.

I have in my collection, 2 color photos of GE 44T #8 at Ark City, in a one-stall engine house. Can't post them...no attribution!

    Also, #2 @ KCMO, 6-22-45 B/W (Don Ross Collection)
