I am curious if anyone could help me out. I am wondering what the order or sequence was when the Frisco or any other railroad would ice refrigerator traffic. Would the reefers be iced before they were loaded with perishable products or after? Not sure if there was an order or sequence that was followed or if the railroads did it whenever it could happen. Any help would be appreciated. Mark H. trains1504
Railroad reefer service was customizable, so icing practice depended on the customer’s needs, the commodity and the season. At times, kerosene or alcohol heaters were placed inside the reefers to prevent the cargo from freezing. FDA best practice from 1961.
Thanks for the quick reply Karl. I just cannot understand for sure how the whole icing thing worked. That answer sheds a lot of light on the subject. Thanks again. Mark H trains1504
The Frisco’s practice is described in a document located here: http://www.frisco.org/shipit/index.php?threads/frisco-refrigeration-procedures.14599/#post-97144
