By chance would these also be a match for Athearn gears like the axles are? I've got several of both idler and axle gears from Athearn units setting in a drawer on my workbench. I would be happy to send you a couple if they're the right thing.
What Athearn lists as gears for the SD40-2, part number ATH60024 are a direct replacement with a little reaming to just under the size of the axle shafts. I have replaced a lot of these for friends.
Thanks Keith. It's not the axle gears I need though. In the attached photos, the turquoise is the axle gear, the purple is a large gear, and the red points to a smaller idler gear hidden underneath. This small gear is what I need.
