I picked up a copy of TRAINZ UTC in February. It was 1.) cheap and 2.) available (MSTS version 2 is not being manufactured any more, and I did not want to mess with E-bay.)

The learning curve is a bit steep to make a North American-based railroad in this Australian product. UTC does not support the level of animation needed for steam, however it does have some early diesels. Working with it to make a credible US prototype will be a satisfyingly challenging, rainy day activity, however.

I have also obtained TRAINZ 2010, Engineers Edition. Since its graphics have migrated from gMax to Blender, I am now a student of Blender with a long road ahead before producing anything.

Meanwhile, the TRAINZ paint shop did offer a couple opportunities. These are attached.

The SW-7 is basically a stock skin painted o&w. I also have 303 in b&y. The masks do not give the side stripe detail completely. Something to work on for a rainy day.

The F-7 skins had dynamic brakes. Note 5024, 5021 and 18 do not. That took a little bit map finagling of bump maps (along with saving originals). The paint mask bit maps are also finagles from the stock UTC masks. I obviously have not figured out the 5-chime horns, a decent coonskin (TRAINZ calls them "concaves" - there will be re-naming of files!) or the gyralight. More rainy day activity!
