St. Louis roundhouse Flyer Avenue, Lindenwood Yard

St. Louis roundhouse and turntable Flyer Avenue, Lindenwood Yard.

Pictures taken by Tom Wirth, in the mid 1940s from up on the Lindenwood Coal Chute.

Note in the first photograph the 3 Baldwin VO-1000 switch engines.

The second photograph has 2 Baldwin VO-1000 switch engines.

Also in all of the images next to the roundhouse is a rail crane.

    Images courtesy of Don Wirth.

When did Frisco tear down the roundhouse in the area of S Vandeventer and Tower Grove in St. Louis?

Was that one in existence when the one in Lindenwood was being used?

Or did they replace it with the one in Lindenwood?

My information is that the Choteau Avenue roundhouse was replaced by the Lindenwood house in the 1920s.

It may have stayed around a short while as a "passenger engine" roundhouse.

Speaking of the Choteau Avenue roundhouse in St. Louis, does anyone have any photographs of that one?

I have some shots of SLSF 1501 when it arrived on the property and it shows part of it in the background, but I've never seen a photo of it before.

    Don,

Your Fyler Avenue pictures are really great!

I'm sure you know of pic in Joe Collias' Frisco Power showing the arrival of mallets 2001 and 2002 at Choteau Avenue engine house.

Can you post the picture you mentioned of SLSF 1501's arrival there?

    Thank you.

Splendid pictures, Don; thanks for sharing.

The building just beyond the left side of the roundhouse, to the left of the water tower, was this a machine shop?

The only diagrams I have seen of the engine facility are post-steam.

I believe this is roughly where the diesel shop was built?

If I eventually build north of my Chaffee layout, I had not planned on modeling Lindenwood.

But, with these pictures, I would have to give it some more serious thought!

    About 1938.

Edit 4/4/2024: On the left edge of the image next to the roundhouse wall note the rail crane and the tender fuel insert adaptor.

SLSF 4522 a 4-8-4 Northern class rides the turntable at Lindenwood Yard.

At least two other 4500s are "poking" their tenders out of the roundhouse.

    Frisco photograph.

Look at the fourth pair of drivers how they appear to be pushed upward when looking at the connecting rod.

I wonder if she suffered frame damage?

I would not think that kind of accident would be severe enough though.

    Maybe a driver journal box?

    Thanks for the pictures.

Blame the outside hostlers for this.

    That is my story.

    From a retired SLSF engineer.
