This E8-A is new in the box. I believe that it is DCC ready. The price on the box is $85, so $85 plus shipping.
Tempting. I wonder if these use the same axle gear as P2K 4 axle models? I figure the axle gears will be split (vintage P2K's always are) and I'm uncertain if the EMD 6 axle truck as modeled require different axle gears. (i.e. Does not use Athearn-type 4-gear axles.) That is the situation for P2K's PA's: Unique axle gears. The axle gears for the PA's are very had to find. Anyone know?
Andre, Check out Walthers! https://www.walthers.com/replacement-geared-diesel-wheelsets-fits-early-proto-2000-r-e6-7-8-9-pkg-3 I replaced mine with these. If I stand corrected, the axles are longer since there are journal boxes in the side frames they fit into. Hope this helps! John
Drat. Just did some research and the 2020 would have been in the simplified red/yellow stripes "Meteorite" scheme in my era. (autumn of 1964). Anyone ever mess with repainting one of these? EDIT: Are appropriate decals available for the "Meteorite" lettering/stripes? Andre
Well, Meteor910 modeled one of these as shown in his album. See: http://www.frisco.org/shipit/index.php?media/dscn2748.377/#media through http://www.frisco.org/shipit/index.php?media/dscn2745.374/#media He might note this and reply with what he used. His model is an E-7 (2005) rather than an E-8 (like 2020). Decals, if available should work, though.
Hi WindsorSpring. Thanks for the assist. The red w/yellow cigar band isn't what I thought was the "Meteorite" scheme. Below is a link of 2020/Big Red as I would want to paint it: http://frisco.org/mainline/wp-conte...-Red-at-Springfield-Missouri-date-unknown.jpg I guess I need to spend some time looking through decals on the Bay. Andre
Andre, it is interesting to note that when the Springfield Shops repainted Big Red #2020 in that "austerity" scheme, painted the word Big with the I and G higher than original. The I and G on the original was aligned on the bottom with all the rest of the letters. All: Yes, I did purchase the engine! I need another engine project like I need a hole in the head. (What can I say? I'm still a sucker for Frisco stuff!) Hi Keith! THANKS for that heads up on that interesting lettering foible. I had never noticed it, and may not have! At this point I intend to model it as 2020 in the "Meteorite" scheme as pictured above and here: http://frisco.org/mainline/wp-conte...8-Golden-Spike-Productions-e1456019414406.jpg https://frisco.org/mainline/2014/03...ulled-by-e8as-2020-and-2011/#jp-carousel-2024 I've already purchased two sets of Herald King's decals for same (old Herald King sets are notorious for disintegrating), and David tossed in a Microscale set of appropriate decals. Surely I'll be able to piece together a decent set of decals from such a selection. I will be cutting off the plastic grabs/rails and replacing with formed wire. Ditto the windshield wipers/etc. I suspect I'll end up stripping the shell and starting over. If so, I'll be pestering this group for a good color for the Meteorite Red. (Is Meteorite Red a bit brighter than the original red?) I want the finished project to reflect it's somewhat dejected condition it wore toward the mid-1960s. In my mind, I can already "see" the finished model. Lands me... another engine project on the shelf!! I'm such an idiot. erdnA
Andre, This might be a help. https://www.microscale.com/Merchant...ode=MD&Product_Code=87-455&Category_Code=SLSF Apparently Microscale changed the 87-455 decals. The sheet I sent you has gold stripes. The ones on the link are Texas Special yellow, probably too yellow for what you want. There are YouTube videos on how to print your own. Use the sheet I sent as a master? Might be an adventure.
