    News Flash!
Richie Meyers, the son of deceased Dr. Richard Meyers of Doolittle, and the first permanent doctor of Newburg, has petitioned the county of Phelps and the BNSF RR to cede over the land currently owned by the county and the BNSF known as "Grotto" from the junction of CR 7530 with State Route "P" 4 miles west of Newburg, to the junction of CR 7530 with Old Route 66 near exit 177 called "Sugartree Overpass" to him and his family. Richie claims that the state is negligent in maintaining the Grotto Bridge and the county road which serves the Grotto, and the area would be better off being privately owned (by him of course). If Richie is successful in acquiring this property from the county it would mean the end to public access to Alhambra Grotto, Bundy Junction, or Knotwell Ironworks without special permission from Richie Meyers. Richie currently has "No Trespassing" signs up at the Grotto, and the famlies that live on his property have had many run-ins with the "locals" who used to come down to the Grotto Bridge to swim and "party" (you can fill in the blanks). Since the floods of October 2009 the CR 7530 access off of Hwy. "P" has been closed to through traffic due to damage to the bridge. I have included a picture of the bridge that was damaged in 2009.
