Hi, my name is Robert Peterson from Emporia, Ks. but all my friends call me Pete. Thought it was time to learn a little bit about the Frisco. I'm a Santa Fe and Rock Island modeler some where in the 70's.

I just acquired a couple of mixed boxes of rolling stock and in it was a very nice Atlas Extended Vision Caboose done up in Frisco livery. That car is what brought me here. How close is the paint, etc. to the prototype? I haven't found any pictures yet of a brown caboose, lots of faded red, but no brown. Am I going to have to repaint or is it close enough?

Looks like a nice forum site and am looking forward to acquiring some coonskin knowledge.

    Welcome to Frisco.org!

I'm sure you'll get lots of help with your caboose question.

A good place to start is to look for 200-series caboose pictures.

Welcome aboard Pete. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than I can help with that. You will find loads of great information on this site as well as great people.

We look forward to learning from you too.

More info on your "brown" caboose. It was the "as delivered" paint scheme, circa 1957. I believe they were renumber into the 1200-series by adding a "1" to the car number when they were repainted red in the 1970's (and then repainted again into O/W?)

So it would be most appropriate from late 50's to the first repaint date.

To all whom have said welcome, thanks, glad to meet you all. This is an awesome website! I wish that there was a Santa Fe site that was this good.

I did find a picture here of 1291 taken in the late 70's and it appears to be a faded and weathered brown which will make the Atlas model a good place to start. I'll throw down a good weathering and marker lights and it should be good to go.

Now I need to start thinking about a couple of locos to put on point and I'll have the Frisco local that has trackage rights across my small portion of the Santa Fe. What was a pretty common locomotive to be used in local service on the Frisco in the mid 70's?

If I can pull this off, I'll have all my favorite roads on my layout with a believeable, although slighty gray, story.

Welcome abord Pete. I too model the late 70's, but mostly frisco. I recently added an interchange to my made up branch line. The inter change will include the ATSF, but not the Rock.

The GP38-AC series SLSF #633-660 were put into service in 1971 and the GP38-2 series SLSF #663-699 were put into service in 1972. The U30b series SLSF #834-857 were put into service beginning 11/1968 through 9/1974. The SD45 series SLSF #900-948 were put into service beginning 2/1967 through 12/1969.

The GP7 series that was so ubiquitous across the Frisco were starting to be phased out in the early seventies, although some (higher numbers 580+) lasted into 1977 - 1979.

That should give you some variety of choices.
