Hello my name is Matt Calahan and I just found this awesome site. I live in Huntsville Al now but my family is from Missouri. I had a great uncle that worked for the Frisco line. I have been into model railroads my whole life and have always picked up Mo-Pac and Frisco more than anything else. I have thought about modeling a small layout or point to point and thought it might be fun to find something prtotypical of the line around the Brimingham Al area. I have a lot of the Micro train hoppers so I thought a coal train was be a good start. I don't know if they ran coal out of this area but everyone else seemed to. I am Looking forward to learning more about the Frisco railroad and making friends with other in this group. Anyone modeling or with info on the Alabama lines such as stops or junctions please let me know. Thanks Matt
Matt: Welcome to the group. I am sure you will enjoy yourself here. There was an excellent article on modeling the Frisco in Birmingham a few years ago in Model Railroader Magazine. I do not remember the issue right now but I can look it up for you if you would like. It may take a few days as I am busy right now. We are having a Frisco Festival this weekend in Pittsburg Kansas and doing final details is taking up some of my time right now. Again welcome to a wonderful group of Frisco Fans, enjoy! Welcome aboard, Matt. Glad to have another modeler around: I presume "N" scale? There is a ton of information here for you. I have still not read and looked at all the various threads and posts. Seems as if I come upon another one each day that I have not seen before.
Matt you might try contacting kenmc (Ken McElreath) via PM on this site. His layout is modeled around Birmingham if my memory is correct. Use the Search feature at the top (below the All Aboard header) to find information about any thing you are interested in. Post questions under the appropriate forum and make certain that in the Additional Options sub-window below where you type in your message, you select Instant email notification in the Notification Type before submitting your questions (you must have provided an email address when you registered). Don't hesistate to send me a PM if you have any questions in general about the forums!
Thanks Bob I would love to know what issue when you have time. No hurry. KLRwhizkid How do I PM someone and is there a list by name? I did a search for kenmc and full name and didn't get much. Thanks to all for the welcome and I look forward to just looking around on this site. Matt
Matt: The article is in the October 1991 issue of Model Railroader magazine. scanned and on Bob Wintle
Several ways to PM someone. One way is to click on the Community link at the top, select Members List, and then search using the alphabet index at the top of the page. By each member's ID is a Send PM button. Also, if you wish to PM someone direct from one of their posts, just click on their User ID and select Send a private message to ...... As well, from the User CP link at the top, on the page that opens, their is a menu in the left column that has a section Private Messages. There you can select Send New Message. In the Recipients box, if you type slowly, the system will offer User IDs based on the letters you have typed. I recognize you're new, but take a little time to explore the various features that make this forum so great - it will pay dividends!
Ken McElreath's actual layout was featured in Railroad Model Craftsman a few years ago (Sorry I don't recall the issue). Tom
