Athearn has just announced the production of a modern 40' Boxcar for the Frisco in two road #'s. The model is a PS1 after it was modified with no roofwalk and low ladders. It looks like these are molded on features. The road # pictured is 73408 and the other road # offered will be 73409. This car resembles the one on the top of page 58 of Molo's Freight Car book. The major difference seems to be the door. I don't know if the model has removable doors or not. Below is the link to the announcement sheet: http://www.athearn.com/newsletter/072109/08_40_MOD_BOX_072109.jpg Since they don't say this is new tooling someone may have a currently available road name and/or can chime in on its accuracy. Sweet! I could use thease on my late 70's era layout, right? Acording to Athearn the era is 1950-1980's
1. You can change the .jpg extension of the URL to .pdf and zoom in on the details. 2. Wrong sill, wrong door: http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/slsf/slsf27093akg.jpg 3. Details are cast on, though subtle, maybe too subtle (I have a couple of the Santa Fe boxcars). 4. These are probably accurate from sometime in the early to mid 1970's when the roofwalks were removed (judging from the above photo, that example was modified in September '74). Cheers, Colin
PS 5. photo http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/slsf/slsf27608jpb.jpg According to the caption taken in the 1960's, but the date on the boxcar is December 1978. The door on the Athearn boxcar is correct for this example, but the side sill is still wrong. 6. Another, unmodified example of this type http://condrenrails.com/Frisco Catalog/Others/FR646.jpg shows a different side sill, but still incorrect. Cheers, Colin
