Are there records anywhere regarding former employees? I realize the SLSF is long since gone, but I'd like to find a little more about my deceased grandfather's career with the Frisco. He hired on at Springfield and lived there quite awhile early in his career as a lineman. He was transferred (or requested--I don't know which) to Quanah to be a lineman on the QA&P around 1941. He was employed as a lineman for the QA&P from around 1941 until 1955. In 1955 he was retired due to an accident on the right of way setting telegraph poles that broke his back in several places. Anyway, his name was James Martin McGuire. He went by "Mac", but anyone who actually knew him is probably long since deceased. If anyone knows of a place to do some research, please let me know. I didn't find anything with his name on it at the Quanah museum when we were there earlier this week.
I went to the Greene County Library Frisco History site and looked in https://thelibrary.org/lochist/Frisco/employee_cards/cards.cfm for the surname McGuire, but did not find James Martin McGuire. I believe that was our best hope. But do not rule out Ancestry.com
I just checked on Ancestry and a member, Mikel_Cooney59 from Woodway Texas has a James Martin McGuire in her family tree information. He was born 15 Aug 1833 • Iredell, North Carolina, father William Spencer Mcguire (1804–1842) 1842 • , Walker, Georgia, USA Sarah Burton (1805–1841) 1841 • , Murray, Georgia, USA Marriage 17 Oct 1861 • Comanche, Comanche, Texas, United States Margaret Jane Barcroft 1846–1917
Thanks, Keith. I appreciate you looking. My mom's dad was born 08 / 08 / 1908 on a farm about 8 miles from Joplin, MO. What I'd really like to find is anything regarding his railroad career.
Paul, I am in the same boat as you with my Grandfather. He was a fireman for Frisco from 1916 to about 1925. I would love to find out more about him, but apparently few of the old employee records were saved. At least I do have a couple of his time booklets that have told me a lot. Good luck with your search. Mark
Hi Mark, Unless you have documents or there's lots of information that's been passed down from family members, it's seemingly difficult to find much regarding former Frisco employees. One thing that's funny / interesting or ironic. Tom Holley and I are pretty sure that our grandfathers knew each other. His grandfather was a locomotive engineer for the QA&P and my grandfather was a lineman for the same railroad. The QA&P was fairly small. How could employees who both worked out of Quanah not know each other?
Hi Paul, I do feel really blessed that I have three of his time booklets from 1917, otherwise I wouldn't know anything about his time with the Frisco. That is cool to think that your and Tom Holley's Grandfathers possibly knew each other. Small world. Mark
