I got this HO scale brass Pacific Fast Mail 2-8-2. The tender is Akane. I have no idea if any of these could be a FRISCO or not. The locomotive runs very smooth and quiet even at slow speeds. There has been extra lead weight installed in the boiler, it is very heavy. Looks to me like it's missing the headlight.
What I do want is a SLSF 2-8-0 with sound. I'm thinking a Spectrum 2-8-0, as maybe it would double head with my Spectrum SLSF 2-10-0.
Anybody want to trade? Does a Spectrum 2-8-0 match the SLSF 2-8-0's at all? Also I would like it to work and have sound in both DC (my RR) or DCC.
    Any ideas? Comments?
    Thanks
    Tom

If you are interested, I have a Spectrum 2-8-0.
Here are some comparison photos for your use. 1324 was an oil burner.

I need to add I intend to primarily use this in DC mode and that I know very little about steam engines, and even less about decoders and or DCC/Sound, or DC W/Sound.
Sounds like I want the newer type dual mode DCC stuff?
    Thanks

  4. It looks something like a USRA mikado, and Frisco had some of those, both heavy and light versions. However, I don't think any of the Frisco's mikados had cylindrical Vanderbilt tenders. eBay completed auction # 200476193087, described as an Akane brass B&O mikado, looks like a similar locomotive, albeit painted for an imaginary RR and reported to be equipped with DCC. The match isn't perfect, as the eBay loco has a center-mounted headlight and the one you have in hand appears to have had a high-mounted headlight. I wonder if the guy who repainted the loco on eBay also altered the headlight.

If anybody has a copy of the Brown Book of brass locomotives, they could check there for versions of USRA mikados with Vandy tenders that PFM and Akane may have produced. (I have a copy, but it's buried in storage where I can't readily get to it.) This would also give you a starting point for getting a reasonably good idea of its value, although bear in mind that prices on such things are very volatile and the Brown Book hasn't been published in many years.

I don't know how much similar brass locos go for nowadays. Has the availability of good RTR USRA mikados (and Russian decapods) in HO driven down the price of brass models of those prototypes? The loco on eBay apparently didn't sell because the reserve was not met at $74.95.

It does look like an early Akane B&O 2-8-2, both engine and tender. I'm not surprised it didn't make the minimum.

The box it came in has PFM literature in it, but that means nothing really. I cannot find any markings on the engine but I did not take it apart either, it runs too good for me to mess with it.
The tender is clearly marked AKANE.
So you think the engine is an AKANE too?
The most valuable part of the whole thing is probably the RI shop rags it was wrapped with:)

Tom swapped this 2-8-2 and a Spectrum 2-10-0 for a Spectrum 2-8-0 with Tsunami sound installed.
