I'm a new retiree in Ohio and now have time to research and model trains. Special interests include passenger trains that served areas where my wife, our relatives, and I lived in our younger days during the 40's through the 60's. It's a daunting task since my wife and I are both military brats and we traveled a lot!

I'm specifically interested in any type of Frisco passenger service during the above period in northwestern Arkansas, especially the Fort Smith and Fayetteville areas.

    Thanks for any info,

One aspect of passenger service on the Frisco through that area that you would relate to derives from the active presence of Fort Chaffee just outside Fort Smith. Up through the end of the '50's it was very common for the passenger train to St. Louis to have extra Pullman cars handling troop movements, and around Christmas there were always extra cars, both coaches and Pullmans, to handle the large numbers of servicemen going home on the liberal leave policies that were usually in effect for the holidays. There were dedicated, solid troop trains operating to Fort Chaffee on the Frisco, Kansas City Southern and Missouri Pacific as late as the mid-60's. As for regular service, though, I described the Frisco's operation in another posted reply to you. The only other thing in NW Arkansas was the Kansas City Southern who still operated two trains each way daily well into the'60's, and one train until around 1970 between KC and New Orleans, and that just skirted the western border of Arkansas, mostly staying on the Oklahoma side.
