Hey yall, I live in Winfield, Alabama which is located on the Birmingham to Amory line. I have been lurking around here and finally decided to join. I am looking forward to discussing the past here with everyone. I was just a young boy, but I remember those big red and white units rumbling through town and a few times catching the coal train coming to Brilliant where I was raised.

Welcome Red, I too was a young boy and remember only red and white diesels. I grew up in Tulsa right on the main line about 3 miles west of Cherokee Yard. Every time I heard a whistle I ran outside to wave at the crews. Dad had a friend who worked at Cherokee and in 1977 when I was 5 years old I got to ride in an SW 1500 switcher and a 1200 class caboose. I have pics of myself aboard both the engine and caboose. Fun times

Like Paul, I grew up west of Cherokee yard but like you I live in Alabama. There's a few other folks from Alabama that patronize this group. Welcome

    Welcome, Red,
Like most of us here, I too have a family connection with the Frisco. At the tender age of 2, I got to ride around the Springfield yards in a F7, in the Black & Yellow paint. Been stuck on trains and the Frisco ever since. Bunch of great folks here, and more info than a computer can digest!! :0) Dan

    Welcome, Red:
I live in (was raised in) Sulligent and I have been working in Brilliant for the last 7 years. I'm working on a 8' x 5.5' HO scale layout with a freelanced, theorectical, modern-AT&N theme. I run a little bit of everything that I've been collecting for over 32 years now. In the real world, I just missed memories of the O/W Frisco locos but I remember Frisco rolling stock after the BN acquired the Frisco very well. BN worked a pulpwood yard here in Sulligent when I was a kid.

I've tracked down every place between Brilliant and Winfield wear it is still possible (barely) to find the old IC/Frisco Brilliant Branch ROW by car... if you know where to look. I remember the old hwy 78 crossing near what are now Burgers & More and Mac's Minute Mart. I think I remember the tracks next to what is now the middle school before they were taken up. I'm sure you've seen some of the railroad pictures in the hospital there in Winfield. I took photos of some of them and posted them on this site a while back. There is a nice pic of a Frisco mallet type locomotive 2-6-6-2 with the Frisco's Winfield water tank in the background. Do you know/remember what year they took up the track on the Brilliant Branch? Just curious.

I have a couple of Frisco related videos on youtube. 1. A video I recorded of Frisco steam engine 1522 returning from Atlanta to MO in June 1994. http://www.youtube.com/results?sear...1j1.20.0...0.0...1ac.1.11.youtube.635uRPW-yfw
    2. I made a bbq grill/smoker loosely based on the Frisco 1529 in Amory, MS. It's 12 ft. long and 3.5 ft. tall and turns out some good eatin'. I posted a video of it at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPwWC6SUepg

Greenwood Springs, MS - Guin, AL is a great stretch of Hwy 278 for running along side trains... but I'm sure you already know that. Anyway, it's great to have another person on the site so close.
