Frisco Caboose Project - HO Scale

  1. Howdy folks! First post here on the site. Lets hope I get the hang of this.

A while ago I acquired a stripped Roundhouse 3 window wood caboose from a friend online. He planned to use it for a freelance project that fell through. I acquired it because I saw a good repaint project. The original idea was actually a NYC planned caboose. Well, it stayed on the shelf for a few months because of a lack of time and tools to finish it. As of this post it is still on the shelf awaiting action. I need to find an airbrush, the right paint and clear cotes for it too.

And here is the kicker: A week ago I found a listing for a prepainted one in NYC Lettering. It is in town as I write this message but the post doesn't deliver today (Nov. 5th, Sunday, 2023). That kinda screwed over my original plans but it was technically ready to be assembled.

Plan B, Frisco caboose! Good thing I joined at the time I did! XD

    Formerly Northern Pacific.

I plan to model really anything from the 1890s to approximately 1943/1944. My sole Frisco engine right now is a custom decorated 2-8-0 as Bachmann 1318, which was built in 1912 ish and rebuilt into a Mikado around the end of WWII. I would like this caboose to reflect the era. I am in the process of obtaining a decal sheet with the proper FRISCO LINES Herald but I still have a few questions of my own for the eventual build.

And yes, I do know of the AMB Caboose kit but I do not have the skills to build that item just yet. For now this is simply modeling practice for the future.
    • What color is the body? Which paint brand would y'all recommend? Did it change from the 1920s to more or less the mid 1940s/end of WWII?
    • Which trucks would you recommend, even if they varied over time?
    • What color should the grabs be?
    • Are there any "unique" Frisco prototypes with this similar-ish window arrangement that can be made to look like my model?
    • What was the number series for the caboose that best matches this model?
    Thank y'all!

    -Isaac

P.S. If anyone is curious, here is what my 2-8-0 looks like. Made from an undecorated model. Dusty, but she works!

When I was painting my cabooses of the "Frisco Line" era, I used Duplicolor Red Oxide primer in a spray can.

Perfect match, flows out and dries even and has just the right luster.

Also used it for Frisco Line box cars.

  4. This one?

Or a different style of spray can?

  5. Paul,

    Will do in time.

But first I still obviously need to find some upgrades like trucks and paint for the grabs if necessary.

  6. Howdy folks, been meaning to update this but I kept forgetting I was even on this site ^^;

I acquired this set of decals from Oddball Decals / The Frisco Railroad Museum with the intent of using it on my caboose.

I have actually had these for a few months and I have yet to apply the decals due to work and mother nature not wanting me to work on my trains, combined with a whole bunch of other unrelated stuff.

Does anyone know which is the best fitting number to use that matches or looks the closest to the Roundhouse car?

My idea is still to use this car from 1920s to at least 1944/1945. Unless of course they started to look different over the years.

    That is the one.

Flows out nice and does not run, dries consistent.
