  1. Perhaps of interest: Fort Scott Tribune 100 years ago column (March 21, 1913) "This morning when 106, better known as the Kansas City-Florida Special, pulled into the city a number of the Frisco workmen met it armed with fire equipment. The diner observation car was on fire and Fort Scott was reached just in time to save the entire car, valued at several thousand dollars. The cook smelled smoke when the train was about an hour out off Fort Scott. He discovered that the woodwork at the back of the stove had caught fire and was blazing. It was so hot that no one could stay in the kitchen. Passengers did not have to be warned of the danger, as the smoke signaled the alarm. The waiters and crew fought the flames for an hour. Had the train not reached Fort Scott, the car would have been destroyed."
