Ewing Avenue Yard - St. Louis, MO

Discussion in 'Yard Offices' started by John P. Kohlberg, Mar 27, 2010.

  1. Greetings,

Just joined in hopes of finding some information so here goes.

I am in search of any information pertaining to Frisco's Ewing Avenue Yard located near the Mill Creek Valley of just southwest of downtown St. Louis.

I am looking for general information, photographs, as well as drawings of buildings, track arrangements, operations, etc.

My era of interest is the late 1960's to late 1970's.

Also, when was the new yard tower constructed at Theresa Ave?

Did this replace the original yard office located near the Ewing pedestrian bridge?

Would like to understand just what was going on there and how it looked and worked.

    Thank you for any assistance,

    John P. Kohlberg

Have you seen the books Trackside Around St. Louis 1952-1959 With Jim Ozment, ISBN 1-58248-039-7) and Terminal Railroad Of St. Louis In Color by Greg Stout, ISBN 1-58248-212-8, both from Morning Sun Books?

Both are all color, with several pictures of Ewing Avenue Yards, full of passenger cars in each book. Greg Stout's book has photos as late as 2004.

Also see Joe Collias' books Frisco Power and Mopac Power. Both these books have lots of photos of yards and tracks around St. Louis.

Also several guys in the St. Louis area here on this chat board that will probably be glad to answer questions.

  3. Thank you for reminding me, Tom.

Yes, being a born and raised St. Louis kid, I own both of the books. I had completely forgotten about the shots of Ewing Avenue Yard.

I will have to keep an eye out for the Collias books.

I also discovered in this group's archives a copy of a Ewing Yard diagram circa 1970. I haven't been a member of this group for over 24 hours, and I have already acquired some concrete and extremely useful information. Needless to say, I am happy.

Anyway, thank you again for the assistance thus far.

    Best regards,

    John P. Kohlberg

I'm not all that familiar with the St. Louis area, but I'm sure lots of the random photos on here will interest you.

If you "click" the "ALL ABOARD" at the top of the webpage, a group of about eight photos will appear. If you see one you're interested in, click on it and you will be led to the picture and its discussion thread.

To renew the group of photographs, hit F5 on your keyboard and a new group of photos in the same spot on your screen will appear.

Sometimes I just sit at my PC and view the pictures including photographs, maps, documents, and timetables.
