    Enid, OK roundhouse - 1940

A nice lazy summer Sunday afternoon in 1940 at the Enid, OK roundhouse finds 12 engines in the picture.

Found an interesting photo of the Enid turntable dated 6/15/1967. The photograph is looking southeast.

The turntable is painted silver with the center electric arch painted black on the top half. The two tracks leading to the turntable are protected by hinged derails (note the "Derail" signs).

The locomotive pictured is a Sand Springs Railway (SS) unit on lease during the grain harvest rush (winter wheat) at Enid. The locomotive is SS 102, an EMD SW-900. Enid is the home of 10 major terminal grain elevators. Due to the significance of these, 8 of the elevators were listed in April 2009 on the National Register of Historic Places.

This is an example of foreign road power at a Frisco terminal that one would not expect. Other terminals saw foreign road power at interchange points or in pool service. However, Sand Springs, OK is a suburb of Tulsa, OK, 118 miles to the east. The Sand Springs Railway's 3 locomotives were not in pool service.

Also in the photograph is the rip track yard building in the background. The rip track is just beyond the building. It is still painted gray with white trim. Further note the overhead steam pipe to the building. The pipe runs on top of used rail uprights that also are painted silver at the bottom and black above the mid point. Steam was used for steam cleaning freight cars and other equipment and heating during cold weather. In the first post above, the black and white photograph dated 1940 also shows the turntable and the stream pipe. That photograph is looking east, northeast.

Great historic information, ideas for modeling and operating opportunities in just one photo.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks!
