Columbus Subdivision - Columbus Air Force Base Spur

I'm wondering if anyone who uses this site ever worked on the spur that went out to the Columbus (MS) Air Force Base. The line was cut in the mid 90's with the 4-laning of US Hwy 45. If anyone has any info as to what was hauled on the spur, when it was constructed, and when the last train went to the base, I am interested. Also, it's been a while since I drove out near the switch on the mainline. Is the remainder of the spur still used for anything?

 

No, its not used anymore. The switch is still in.

 

Did the USAF maintain a locomotive to switch the base?

MacDill AFB in Tampa, Florida, had a 45 tonner I believe it was and when I attended T.R. Robinson High School in Tampa in 63-64 it would come off the base around 8 AM to pick up and deliver to the Atlantic Coast Line interchange. I watched it from home room before regular classes. It and the track is long gone now but oddly still shows on the Steam Powered Video railroad Atlas that contains Tampa Bay trackage as in service and not abandoned!

Also, how many military installations were located on the Frisco?
