A Little Layout Progress QA&P

  1. Funny Tom, with the braking function and someone elses engine on someone elses modular layout with a crowd watching there actually is some pucker factor, I am guessing 1:87th the real thing. HA

    The one they had for use did have a panic button for when you forgot about brakes or how controller worked to keep stuff off the floor.

    That control stand that I re-engineered is on John Breau's Great Northern layout.

    It can be assigned to any function the decoder will support.

    Pictures and Video's of recent action on the MRR from my own, and many friends power, and sometimes their own entire train's operating on the QA&P MRR.
    You never know which RR's power will show up.
    Here we have 2 Blue Box Athearn (early run) SP AC4400 units that weigh at almost 2 Lbs each, weighed them with steel shot that was glued into the shell, really makes a difference in their tractive effort. 47 cars ( I think) and a caboose. 1 1/2% ruling grade, there are a couple places where the grade lessens and the train speeds up a little. I am trying to keep the voltage down to keep wheel spin to a bare minimum. I had to set out 5 cars before these 2 locos would pull the train up the hill.
    There will be some Frisco and QA&P content too!

    Thanks Steve. That train started out at 54" off the floor and when it went over that QA&P bridge it was 72". So these locos really do work, that dastardly yard and train master, always try to put every ounce on every train it will pull. Sometimes they stall out. Just adds to the operating realism.

    Thing is as long as the train leaves the yard it is now not their problem LOL.
     
  7. HA, sounds realistic Tom. Do you make your engineers sit for hours beside their engine smoking 3 cartons of cigarettes waiting for a green light too? Maybe blocking the door so nobody can get in or out of the train barn too while its tied up? LOL Maybe a couple kids to throw rocks half way through the run? HA

    I tried to pull this loaded coal train with 4 SD40-2's. It stalled, then after looking at loco tonnage ratings westbound between Lazar and Swearingen, an SD45 was rated at 2475 tons, which calls for 5 units on a 12,375 ton train. So in reality and 13,000 ton plus train would call for 6, SD40/45's. or more than likely doubling the hill. So the Pease river grade was an ample grade for any RR to contend with. Just so happens these 5, SD40-2's were able to pull that hill un-assisted. I would like to see a locomotive tonnage rating chart for 1980 on the SL-SF. Mine is from 1977.

    Anyway here is a short video of these old work horses doing their best. All these cars are weighted to close to real weights and are rolling on Intermountain wheelsets. Also managed to get one of the brass cabooses, I was so lucky to get from they legendary, Rick McCellan's collection. I painted detailed and now rolling all over the MRR. Sure miss his input to this forum, I never met him, but he has a great sense of humor and a humble kind of gentleman to me. I still have much peanut butter in reserve in case he has more to offer :).

    Speaking of Rick McClellan... does anyone know what has happened to him? Is he okay health wise? Is he still active in model railroading? I sure miss his presence here at Frisco.org.

    The one thing I always enjoy is stopping with the last car on the xing (NOT!) Even had a cop one time crawl up on the engine and try to write us a ticket. Asked us for our drivers license, we told him it was not a motor vehicle and did not need a state drivers license to operate a locomotive, on private property, well, he got kinda mad then. Showed him my engineer card, he was not a happy camper, but nothing he could do really, he found out. I called up the dispatcher told him the Officer wanted our train to get moving, the dispatcher just laughed on the radio, and said he would move our train when he was good and ready. I mean that cop actually thought we stopped there because we just decided it was time to take a break or something, I mean there has been some strange stuff happen.

    Rick is alive and well. His military re-enacting (WWI U.S., WWII U.S., WWII German, VietNam U.S.) seems to eat up a lot of his time. He has been working on his layout and has added to the overall linear running distance (now at about 900'), and added more scenery, structures, and more. He admits he doesn't frequent the forum as much as he did, but is still very active in the local MRR scene.

    Thanks Keith.

    He sure is missed, but we all have our priorities. So good to know he's doing well and enjoying life. Next time you see that rascal, tell him "Coonskin" said "Howdy"!
