How did the bells work?

I was wondering, how exactly the bells worked on the steam locomotives, both back in the day, and today (Frisco 1522)

I'm sure that back in the day, someone had to pull the cord to get the bell moving but something about 1522 was different. When the bell started, it would start going towards the body of the locomotive and then out and away, against the direction of the string leading back to the cab.

Did the SLSTA mount a motor that could be activated with a switch to get the bell going, or is there something else i'm missing?

Thanks Karl. Looked back there, but had no idea what an "Air Ringer" was.
