I am having a model built of car SLSF 844, a coach, baggage, caboose combination as pictured on page 247 of Joe Collias' book Frisco Power. Does anyone know the color of the car? It has passenger lettering so I am assuming it is Pullman green. Also, does it have the "mule skin" roof? Thanks for the help. Larry F.
There is another photograph of SLSF 844 from the Otto Perry Collection in the Denver Public Library. It was taken at Walnut Ridge, AR, on August 12, 1940. It is a similar view of the same side. However, the online viewer allows extreme enlargement, which may help with details. http://digital.denverlibrary.org/cdm/fullbrowser/collection/p15330coll22/id/67530/rv/singleitem
The late Richard Napper built a model of this car and published an article on how to do it. Not sure which publication it was in. Seems to me off hand it was not Model Railroad Craftsman (MRC) or Model Railroader (MR).
Larry, Take a look at this thread. http://www.frisco.org/shipit/index.php?threads/caboose-coach-combine-844.1389/#post-7646 It was Pullman Green with white lettering. I saw Tom this morning and he asked.
Thank you one and all and in particular Keith. As slow as Tom works, I will probably ask this again as we will have forgotten the original thread. Larry
I believe it was in Caboose Kibitzer, the National Model Railroad Association (NMRA), Mid Continent Region (MCoR), publication. Richard mailed me a copy of his article years ago when I had inquired about the car at some point or another. Based on where I lived at the time, it must have been pre-1998. I will have to see if I can find it. I do recall that Richard's model and article included the car in its as-built wood sheathing. The photograph that George linked above shows the car in its steel sheathing. Based on SLSF 843's history, this probably happened circa 1946. I think both SLSF 843 and SLSF 844 had "muleskin" roofs, but I would have to double-check. This one's definitely on my "model it someday" list. Best Regards,
Follow-up: I was pretty sure I had transcribed the text from Richard's article here somewhere and here it is. Caboose-Coach Combine #844 If I can find the article, I would be happy to try to scan the photographs. However, as my copy is a copy, I am not sure how well they will do up. First things first, though. Larry, I am looking forward to seeing your finished model, or even photographs of the work in progress. Best Regards,
Here are the All Aboard links to Richard's article, Coach-Cabooses on the Hoxie Sub and Centerspread diagram Here are pictures of the model kit-bashed in styrene by Tom Teeples here in Kansas City for Larry Fey. Tom used Richard's article and other information found herein to create it.
Wow! I've been wanting to build that thing for several years but never got off the ground. Decal rivets are your friend.
Here are some update pictures of my SLSF 844 project. It has been idle for over a year but I am getting started on it again today. I thought shaping the roof or 3D printing stove vents was tough but WOW those rivet decals!
This is really looking great Tim. Right down to the truss rod gap in the turnbuckle. Jog my memory, is this HO-scale?
