Modeler and Decal Producer Jerry Glow has just introduced two new decal sets for either the HO Atlas or Tichy USRA Rebuilt Boxcars. One is a basic set with the coonskin herald and the other adds the "Frisco Fast Freight" slogan. His website link is:

Hey, Bob, I know your post is over four years old, but I wonder if you know if he is still selling decals. I have emailed him, but he has not responded. One of the decal sets is exactly what I need to decal four single sheath box cars, and I would really like to know if he is still producing before I send a check.

    Thanks, Terry

    Terry and All:

I think there was a post on one of the Yahoo Groups that announced he was retiring or quitting or whatever. I will do more checking so stay tuned and keep your billfold in your back pocket for now!

    To All:

This came from another forum. It was dated August 20th of this year.

    Jerry Glow Decals

Jerry Glow has officially closed his decal business. Any remaining orders for which he has received payment will be processed, but no new orders are accepted. If you have an outstanding order, you may wish to contact Jerry to make sure he indeed has your order.

Thank you, Bob, for the report. As has been my luck recently, I can't seem to get all of the necessary supplies to complete any of the projects I have going. I thought I had hit the jack pot when I found your earlier post and he had exactly what I needed. Oh, well, back to the drawing board. Do you or anyone here know of any single sheath box car decals with the "Frisco lines" herald?

That's bad news about Gerald Glow shutting down his decal business. Seems we Frisco Folks are having poor decal luck lately. Gerald's decals are quite nice, very opaque lettering, though they are a bit more difficult to handle during application than, say, a set of Oddballs are.

I've only used one Glow set. I have a nice tank car set he made which I might be using shortly - I've done up the "old-timer" MDC tank car into a pretty neat looking early t/c - all that is needed is to apply decals and it is between Gerald's SHPX set and Champ's UTLX set. I do have one set of Gerald's SLSF Frisco Lines box car decals, plus his set for a QA&P box car. Nice - very crisp lettering, wish I had ordered more.

I am bringing several sets of Frisco boxcar decals to the MPHS-Frisco meet in Joplin. They will be at the company store table.

one reason why decals are drying up is apparently that ALPS printers are going out of warranty and so parts and repair for them are going to become either difficult or impossible.

    You are correct Sir,

You haven't been able to repair or warrantee an ALPS printer for many years in the US, the last place that was factory authorized in the US was in San Jose CA, which is where mine came from. There are folks in England and now China (where everything is made nowadays) and for a tidy sum of cash will exchange your ALPS printer, your printer will have many different colors in it as they simply rebuild from a pile of parts. This is all a result of copy right, or similar laws here, (US).
The real problem is ink, and in specific White. As most printers don't print White. White ALPS ink cartridges are like gold. A lot of people have asked me to make decals, but just replacing the White ink cartridges alone make any production out of the reach of almost everyone, including myself. Another issue with ALPS printers is they will not print opaque Yellow, Red, or Orange colors as they use a dot matrix type of print process to make these colors and up close they really do not stand up to a real silk screen type decal. You have to spend some real $$ to get a modern printer that will print White, Yellow, Red or Orange on decal paper.

Tom, it's amazing that you have been able to keep yours puttering along all this time.
thanks for the explanation and details.
in the past, I tried to follow the postings of guys on the Yahoo Group .. But, as I really didn't have a clue as to what they were talking about, I just gave up.
