Can anyone confirm - is this location Olathe? Been told it is. If so, probably the KS-Fla Spl early in the morning on the way to KC Union Station. Our son Kurt lives in Olathe. I'm over there often, and would like to find the spot. Ken |-|
It's Olathe. Train is probably 101, the southbound Southland. The Sunnyland usually had but one E-unit, and it rarely carried lt. wt equipment.
Karl - Thanks a bunch. Which direction is the train going? You are probably right about it being "The Southland". I didn't think of that. Plus, 2010 was one of the E's they kept until after passenger service ended. Ken
Train is on the West Track and is headed south. It also appears that the one of the lt wt RPO-Baggage cars is in the train.
Specifically it was located on the west side of the tracks between Park & Loula St. This location is gone now, the new Olathe flyover is being built on top of it. Roger
Hi Ken, These are images from my collection. Roger identified these as being located in Olathe when I posted them: http://www.frisco.org/vb/showthread.php?t=626 FYI, please DO NOT repost images you find on the net to this site. That IS a copyright violation, and the site could get into trouble for it (perhaps even shut down). The proper way to avoid any trouble is to link to the page containing the images ( you can't make the images appear as though they are coming from this site). (I make my living on copyrights, so I have to point out these things when I see them). Paul
Ken, The strange thing about the picture are the shadows. Either the train is headed northbound in the afternoon or southbound in the morning. The Kansas City-Florida Special departed Kansas City at night and arrived in the morning. I suggest instead that this is the Southland, successor to the Sunnyland in 1965 after the Special was discontinued. The consist is correct for that train, and it departed Kansas City in the morning. That would be in agreement with the location of Olathe, looking northwest. Ken McElreath
Paul - Sorry about that! I have thousands of SLSF images and have no idea where the vast majority of them came from or who to credit. Through the years friends have sent them to me, or I got them off of web sites, from eBay, swaps with others, etc. I'll be more cautious in the future. Today's fantastic electronic world presents a host of problems for society - surely, this is not one of the major ones. Thanks. Ken
The slides these images came from are dated April,1967. I'm pretty sure this is the date they were developed, but that would certainly put the date of the photo after the 1965 change from the Sunnyland/KCFS to the Southland. Paul
