Signal at South Freeze Siding- River Division, Cape Girardeau MO Signal at South Freeze Siding (appx. MP130.5). River Division, Cape Girardeau MO 12-26-1994.
Signal box Well-vandalized Signal Box (not sure if that's what they are really called). North end of Cape Yard (River Division) a good skipping stone's throw from the Mississippi. I recall these being in place during Frisco independence, but if anyone knows to the contrary please advise.
Section Gang Speeder Shed Dixon, MO at the top of Dixon Hill - the old spot engines kinked the track every time they climbed the hill keeping a section gang employed at Dixon even after the 1944-45 regrade. They hung on to their jobs into the diesel era somehow. They were really old guys. The section super was named Wilson, and his family lived in the decrepit section house at Dixon a half block from our house. Their speeder was a very noisy "one lunger". Just east (behind) the shed was a brick pump house for the water well. When I was very young, I remember a tall tower structure on top of the pump house probably left over from the drilling. The water was so hard, Frisco had two water tanks there - one for the treated (softened) water and the other for the chemical treatment. It was coated with a white chemical (Wulfert, would it have been lime?) Their footings are still there, but the other structures are only a memory. The photos of the WB (probably 33) were taken with me standing on one of the water tank footings.
Re: Section Gang Speeder Shed Doug - Yes, mainly calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate, with some significant iron compounds thrown in to make it all look ugly when it precipitates out on some hard surface. Ken ps - Love the Ford Falcon waiting at the crossing!
