If anybody lives near Hillsdale Kansas, I would appreciate if someone can go to the BBQ retaurant there and check the condition of the end platform and stairs of caboose 1292. Caboose 1292 is an integral part of the bbq joint there but one end of the caboose is on the exterior of the building. The owner has offered to sell the platform end to us to help with our restoration of 1291. (1291 has collision damage on one end) It woud be much easier for us to cut off the end platform of 1292 and install it on 1291 then it would be to fabricate a new platform and stairs and duplicate an exact match. 1292 has already been severely molested as they have cut a doorway in the center of the body and cut some pieces off of the other end of the caboose to fit the building around it so its not like we are defacing a nice survivor. Anyway if anybody can go inspect it for condition I would be happy to reimburse for fuel and time. We just dont want to drive up there if its in bad shape, but if we know its usable we can go purchase it and remove it all in one day. The owners name is Greg and he was very receptive to the idea of selling us what we need. He said anybody can go and inspect it and its okay. Thanks !! Paul

Re: Does anybody live near Hillsdale Kansas? Hi Kent, that is AWESOME !! The place is called Hillsdale BBQ, its at 201 Frisco Street (how cool is that?) The owners name is Greg, the phone number is 913 783 4532 They are open only on Friday , Saturday, and Sunday but Greg said any of us can inspect it any day of the week. Some pics would be great, Would like to see condition of the stairs and the platform ends that the outer part of the stairs bolt onto. Let me know what day you are going and I will let Greg know ( I have his cell number but he asked me not to share it) Anyway this is greatly appreciated ! They will work fine if they are straight, surface rust is no big deal. Thanks very much ! Paul
Re: Does anybody live near Hillsdale Kansas? It was funny, when I spoke to Greg on the phone I told him we needed parts for a "Frisco" caboose and his was a match. He told me "Im sorry, my caboose is a Burlington Northern" but I explained to him that his caboose was a Frisco before it was a BN and he said "well good perhaps I have something of use" .

I have uploaded photo's to my flickr account of the caboose/Bar-B-Q joint. https://www.flickr.com/photos/nvrr49/ There are a lot of bushes around the end of the caboose, and it is really not accessible without some serious trimming of the bushes. It looks to be in good shape, but there no steps... These are raw unedited pictures, and I will edit them later, and maybe get some better views when cropped.
Thanks Kent, looks good to me. Will probably take a trip next week to gather some parts. Was the food any good?
Yes, I recommend the Final Four sandwich. Kent in KC nvrr49@yahoo.com Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
The owner of the Hillsdale bbq joint called me today, he is closing the doors and now he is ready to sell off pieces of 1292. He invited me to come up and "take anything I want" from the caboose, even if I have to cut it off with a torch. That is great news because several windows are needed for 1288, and the ladders and railings are needed also, plus a lot of small parts like door handles and latches. We will be going late next week to spend a couple days cherry picking 1292. If 1292 were in better condition I would consider buying the entire caboose, but she has been hacked up with large sections of the wall missing so restoration would be a bit difficult. Should be a fun trip, I plan to spend a couple days up there.
Well Paul, good for you. Even though a torch may be involved, at least the pieces will be put to good use.
