Not long ago I discovered a brief item in the Frisco's Employee Magazine that spoke with optimism about expansion into northwest Texas. Suddenly the appearance of the GT&W on Frisco Lines maps made sense. Unfortunately, it was a wrong decision made at the wrong time for the wrong reasons. I am indebted to Jeff Cooney and Ken Wulfert for their considerable assistance with this piece.
That's some great history and background work Karl. I was born and raised til age 13, about 15 miles timetable East of Paducah. I cant help but think that had the trackage, and the subsequent rights actually taken place, Paducah would have been quite a RR town. It made sense then, and IMHO still does, Had the QA&P had the funding and wherewithal to have expanded to Lubbock, there is a good chance that little stretch of RR would still be there. I had no idea all those plans were ever considered. A interesting read for sure.
Thank you for this very interesting article. My version of the QA&P did make it Lubbock and onto El Paso to the west and has a line which takes off at Paducah and goes toward Vernon, Ardmore, and points east.
Thanks for the info on the G,T&W. I greatly appreciate it as I'm creating a free-lanced railroad based on that fallen flag. GBY
