For you diesel experts: I noticed the picture of the Frisco Baldwin DS-4-4-1000 in the "Frisco Archive" section. What is the difference between a DS-4-4-1000 and a VO-1000??

    Thanks, Tom

VO1000 was produced between 1939-1946. It had a 1,000 horsepower De La Vergne model VO prime mover. The DS-4-4-10 (can't find a reference to a DS-4-4-1000 in Pinkepank's Diesel Spotter's Guide) was produced after 1946. Between 1946-48 it was built with an 8 cylinder naturally aspirated model 608NA prime mover rated at 1,000 HP. Between 1948 and 1951 it was built with a model 606SC 6-cylinder supercharged 1,000 HP engine. Carbody changes among models occurred periodically, but not concurrent with model designation changes.

Also as a general rule, the Baldwin DS series switchers are a tad bit (couple feet or so) shorter than the VO.

Mike Condren's Frisco Diesel Locomotives page shows the unit as a "1000" and this Wikipedia page describes the unit as a DS-4-4-1000. It does not show Frisco as an original owner. This page shows Frisco as owning four units (in agreement with Mike Condren's site). My copy of Frisco Diesel Power is at home and I cannot access it from here so I don't know what information it contains on these locomotives.
