Lowry City, MO, Osceola Subdivision (KCCS), MP 107.2

  1. Lowry City, MO.

I have 2 photographs of Lowry City, MO depots that I received from a friend of mine.

One is of the Frisco depot and the other is one that my friend claims is the KCC&S depot.

The two pictures are different due to the fact that the Frisco depot has a gable on the front of the roof and the other does not.

    Anybody know for sure?

The KCOS depot was the larger of the two and it is shown on the top.

    The KCOS depot was 86'-3" x 20'-2".

The KCCS or Leaky Roof depot was 22'-0" x 62'-0".

The dead giveaway is the track condition.

  3. Those are some very nice photographs.

And Karl is right about the depot identifications.

Are there dates or other information on the backs of the photographs?

The www.missouridepots.com website has photos of a few other KCC&S depots for comparison.

You'll note that the Collins, Dunnegan and Fair Play depots look similar to the Lowry City KCC&S depot, especially in the two-tone paint job and the lettering style used for the town name.

www.missouridepots.com also has a very blurry version of the KCO&S/SLSF depot picture, which it dates to 1909. Your copy is much better. Note the grain elevator in the distance. This was north of the depot, on the east side of the tracks, and shows up in town plat maps of the early 1900s.

If you're in Clinton and have the chance to talk with Mike Good, one of the librarians at the Henry County library, do so! He's very knowledgeable about the railroads of Henry County and surrounding areas, and runs a website about them.

  4. Oh, and by the way, welcome to frisco.org!

It is always good to see another denizen of this site with an interest in the SLSF Clinton Subdivision and the KCC&S.

  5. Thanks for the information.

I know Mike Good very well and he is very knowledgeable about the area railroads and he has compiled a lot of information on his website that otherwise we would not have.

I have three items from the KCC&S, a box car seal press, a spittoon with the KCC&S printed on the rim and a KCC&S employee's pass.

I feel very fortunate to have these items.

    Thanks again for the input.

    Don,

Mike is possesses a wealth of knowledge, and he is very generous in sharing it.

I too, have a KCCS spittoon, which I bought in of all places, Houston during the early the 1980s.

I would enjoy seeing a picture of yours if you have a chance to post it.

  7. Empire Builder,

Here is a photograph of the spittoon that I have.

It is pretty rough looking, but the KCC&S shows up really well.

It does not have any debts or dings, but the porcelain has had some rough treatment, but I'm lucky to have it.

Charles Rutherford who was a passenger conductor on the highline gave it to me about 40 years ago.

    Don,

    Thanks for posting.

There used to be an old baggage-RPO that sat under a Southwest Freeway viaduct near the Montrose area of Houston. It served as a railroad memorabilia shop. I was surprised during one of my visits to see a KCCS spittoon, which I purchased as soon as I saw it.

The previous owner had masked over the lettering, and painted both the interior and exterior. I left well enough alone, and I never tried to remove the paint to inspect the condition of the enamel.

  9. Karl,

I believe you better leave your spittoon like it is.

It looks a lot better than mine.
