  1. since i am new to the list this may have been covered, but I bought an Oddballs decal set for a two bay hopper car thatnot only has the coonskin logo, but the Frisco Fast Freight slogan. Was this used on only one car or on a series of cars?

    Doug -

Don't know. I've looked through my pics and can't find anything.

If it was on more than one car, it wasn't on many. Perhaps an experiment, or somebody getting creative in the paint shop? I do seem to recall seeing a pic somewhere - FMIG NL's? Museum All Aboards?

The OddBalls decal instruction sheet indicates the decal set is for a series of cars - SLSF 90800-91599. Black car, white lettering when new. These were PS cars built in 1949. The decals reflect a rebuild (and presumed repainting) in 1952.

    Perhaps Richard has the background.

The original Atlas Frisco 2-bay hopper model in red oxide, with the mistake on the top side support stakes, was numbered in this series (SLSF 90801), but it had the centered large black coonskin decor. A pic of SLSF 90941 in this scheme is in Molo on page 94. It looks like a 1963 rebuild.

If you have one, compare the Atlas car to the side stakes on SLSF 90941. Atlas' die maker got real confused on this series of cars, and Atlas had to fix it on subsequent releases.

ps - This series rode on ASF A-3 Ride Control trucks. Ajax brake.

Doug, there was indeed at least one car like this and in the photo I have of it, it appears to be a black car. I will be happy to scan the photo and send it to you.

    Tony -

Neat! Thanks for posting the pic.

I wonder what the story was behind this hopper car in this scheme? Given the scarcity of photos of cars decorated like this, it could have been an experiment.

But, there was at least one for sure. Get out the Oddballs decal set and go at it! I agree with your earlier posting that the car asppears to be black.
