I was wondering which is correct. St. Louis and San Fransico, or St. Louis - San Fransico. I always thought it was SL-SF, but it seems I read somewhere that it was SL&SF. I noticed this site calls it SL&SF, so that is why I am asking.
Finally.. a discussion. I wont be a self proclaimed know it all like so many railfans you meet. I do have both the books about the Frisco and my dad retired from them before the evil horde took over in '79. I am quoteing the following facts (not making them up to sound like a authority) Before 1916 it was the SL&SF. After 1916 it reorganized and became SL-SF. Page 6 of Frisco In Color by Louis A. There is more before this;that and this from "A Brief History and Steam Locomotive Roster of The St.Louis-San Francisco" by H.K.Vollrath in Midwest Railroader, Feb.1964 St.Louis & San Francisco Railway Co. formed 9-7-1876 from Atlantic & Pacific Railroad Co. but came under AT&SF control in 1890. Out of AT&SF control and receivership new company formed as St.Louis & San Francisco Railroad Co.in June 1896. B.F.Yoakum's "Frisco System" broken up,sold, emerged as St.Louis-San Francisco Railway Co. on 8-24-1916. LONG LIVE THE FRISCO!!!!!!!!!
Pat- I does get confusing: 1) St.Louis & San Francisco Railway 1876-1896 2) St.Louis & San Francisco Railroad 1896-1916 3) St.Louis-San Francisco Railway 1916-1980 Hope this clears it up. Roger
