Tank car has been dulled. I'll start weathering in a few. Maybe my digital camera will cooperate and I'll try one of my horrible movies again. LOL...

Let me do the weathering here. I'd explain everything. If Richard wants to humble me with an article, I'll oblige. My honored you would even think of me to do an article. Many thanks.

The tank car is basically finished. This is the first time I've ever used weathering chalks. They are from Bragdon Enterprises. Very nice stuff. I'll give a recount in the morning.

Fine job, Manny. Looks very realistic. I notice that your decal film is still quite thick. No big deal until the weathering chalks build up around the edges and form a visible border. [IMG]Kinda kills the illusion. Just a suggestion, leave the decal in the water until it floats off the paper. This ensures that all the glue has dissolved away leaving no residue. Then apply the decal to a puddle of solvaset and position it followed by more solvaset. This method will virtually make that pesky clear film disappear leaving only the decal lettering. Layers of gloss coat on top will not eliminate the film thickness. Decal application and weathering is an art and is even more challenging when applied to light colored surfaces like a silver tank. Not trying to bust your chops, Manny. It's all a learning process that builds on experience. The weathering looks great for your first use of chalk.

I know. I saw that last night. The problem is with Rail Graphics. The decal paper he uses the film is very thick. This isn't an opinion, but is known in the hobby. I was fooled by the flat aluminum paint as the decal seemed to just disappear against the color. Railgraphics decals require gallons of solvaset to fad the edges down. I thought I drowned those enough. I guess I didn't. The strange thing is that the sides of the car did not have that problem versus the end. This makes me believe that I may not have gotten enough gloss cote on the ends to blend. Bottom line, it is my failure and now I have to live with it.

That's just how I felt when I saw my crooked decal. Dang photographs! Overall it's an excellant model, Manny. Hats off to you.

Ya know, when looking at the car from a foot or two away, I doubt that one could see the "edges." Good looking car.

That said, your modeling skills most likely have improved from the learning experience. The first car I ever built was a LaBelle NG coach. Looking at it now, it is fugly bad. But I just can't seem to part with it. It'll probably find it's way to a backyard as a storage building somewhere.

Starting on the next tank car. The first step is to sanding seal all the parts. Wood, although cut in these pieces, are still living and suspect to humidity and temperatures. Without sealing the wood, you will end up with warps, bends, bows, splits, etc., that will ruin an obviously good detailed model. So I spread the parts out on my spray board and gave them a coat of sanding sealer. In the morning, I will flip the pieces and do the other sides. This should always be the first thing you do with a wooden kit, regardless if it is a car or a building.

This tank car will be for kerosene only. It will be all black, and have a yellow dome. Markings will be all white. Six wire hold downs, with turnbuckles alternating for tightening. This car will have ladders to the dome and hand rails, along the side of the tank. It will also have the platform railings. A little different to mix up the style. This one will be weathered, just not as much.

Have the frame all together and truss rods installed. Finished with the treatment of the wood for riveting, which I'm doing right now. Pics shortly.

Well so much for pictures. I went on a tear and completed the car. She's gotten her coat of black paint and is drying right now. I hope to shoot some pics tomorrow when I can put the tank on the body and then Gloss cote. I will probably weather the trucks tonight.

I can't have Sherrel's disappointment on my shoulders. The poor guy. He must have turned deep blue holding his breath that long. Here you go Sherrel (Y'all). A posing picture. I still need to attach the tank and dome. That will be done tomorrow.

Thats OK, Manny. You are thinking about the nothern part of the State .. Not around here too much.

These cars have no catwalks or ladders? How are they loaded?

These must be the new rivets? They look very good. All in all ...nice work.
