Hi group, Could anyone tell me if any of the (as built) RS2's ever ran over the AT&N on a regular basis?. Cheers, Brian,UK.
Hi Brian, After a bunch of research, I came up with nothing. Hopefully, someone on the forum will do better than I did.
Thank you for looking and for your time.... Just curious as there is a picture on the MississippiRails site of a rs2m (552) at reform in 69',plus i'm looking at pinning down a time frame to model too;ie late 50s or late 60s,though i'd prefer the mid-late 50s ..pure rs2's and all..!!. Cheers, Brian.
I have yet to see any concrete knowledge on the RS-2s the Frisco owned, so we'll have to go with inferred information. The RS-2's (and really the RS-1's as well) are a bit of an enigma. Most of the pictures I have seen of both models are of them in or around Springfield, but they're not constantly photographed around Springfield. I would throw out a guess based on that observation that the RS 1/2's ventured into Springfield to be serviced occasionally, but spent most of their lives on the peripheral parts of the system that aren't widely photographed. I think it would be reasonable to see an RS2 in service over the old AT&N line. 3 of the 5 were remotored in late 1959 and the other 2 late 1960. Either side of that date will present a challenge for modeling being that the RS-2 hasn't been widely produced in HO Scale (I'm guessing you're in HO Scale?), and I don't know of anyone that has produced a correct model painted for the Frisco. A rebuilt version would be quite the project as well. Which ever way you decide to go, we would love to see progress pictures on the forum
My layout is late 40's / early to mid 50's, but it's a freelance version of the QA&P in and around Texas. I'm afraid that I don't know a whole lot about the operations on the AT&N.
Here is my rebuilt RS 2 on an MDC kit with an Athearn GP7 long hood. I think the prototypes had GP18 long hoods. I managed to get rid of the dynamic brake housing but the winterization hatch is still there. Haven't posted it yet but it, like all my stuff, is for sale. Dave
True, either version of the RS-2 will require some modelling on my part, though either version is very doable. As for HO scale ....nahh i model in O scale/proto 48...(nothing against other scales mind you...) Anyhow decals for modelling any of the liveries has been made a whole lot easier on account of K4 decals producing them in o scale as well as other scales. It's just going to take some time to do. There is a line in the Frisco Diesel power book (Mare -Harper) which does say "Their principal use was a local road-switchers based in springfield" but like yourself i see no reason why they could'nt have worked along the old AT&N line with the RS-1s, (got two them of them sat here too waiting for shops..!) i mean they are basically the same apart from the troublesome 12-244-B motors in them plus the RS-1s seem to be used quite freely on certain parts of the system?....ahh decisions. I too don't know a much about AT&N operations or the QA&P either for that matter, but it just seems to appeal to me not least because of the thought of RS-1s switching out few freight cars along with some bright yellow wood racks in a small backwater town...or am i getting the wrong idea about the line... Having said that i have looked at the Clinton sub too,all thanks to Paul Dolkas's article in the 2008 model railroad planning, plus there seems to be a bit of info for this too. Anyhow i've got time as i don't intended to start layout of any sort for a while yet,in part to a possible house move/job relocation next year sometime!. But i will post up any builds as and when i do,do anything... Cheers, Brian.
Tom Holley, who is a very active member of the forum, built, painted and super detailed a beautiful example of the ATN RS-1 101. It's now on my layout. For awhile I dabbled in O scale, but there's just not room for it. Two of the O scale cars I have are US Hobbies pulpwood cars painted and lettered for Frisco.
That is nice and the layout is too... Ahh yes the wood racks,i've seen those in the thread that you posted the picture to.Mr Holley had done a really nice job ... I'm going to use them as my guide to re-painting mine.. as there is very little in rhe way of pictures from what i've seen.( i have 3 atlas - 1 US hobbies) Thanks for sharing.. Brian.
"You had my interest, now you have my curiosity". I don't know much about the O scale scene, so I'm looking forward to hearing about your venture into that realm. As for prototypes, I would like to throw out a couple more "back water" areas of the Frisco that are often over looked: The Enid sub and the Arkinda Sub. The Enid sub served western Oklahoma from Enid down to Fredrick, and originally crossed the river into Vernon, TX. Lots of grain and related agriculture products. The Arkinda sub served SE OK and SW AR from Hope, AR to Hugo, OK. Lots of involvement in the paper and lumber industry down there.
19th st. said: ".......nahh i model in O scale/proto 48...(nothing against other scales mind you...)," to which Skyraider, who lives (and models, amazingly) in Texas replied, "...I dabbled in O scale, but there's just not room for it." I hope others find this as amusing as I did!
As i/we've slightly strayed from the RS-2 theme i started a new thread here to carry on with the change of subject...http://www.frisco.org/shipit/index....-frisco-prototypes-to-model.14919/#post-97988 Cheers, Brian.
