It appears that the photo at the store is known, then, and is not the only copy.

Where was it taken and when? What about an ID on the wood reefer in the background?

Unfortunately I don't have any information about the photo. I found it on the internet somewhere, probably the news group alt.binaries.pictures.rail

During March 10-11, 1948, the Frisco ran a PR/Demo train between Springfield and OKC with the EA-7's and some of the on-hand Meteor cars. The debut of the new Meteor occurred during May 14, and the Texas Special debut occurred during May 16.

  7. Nice photo Patrick !

Sadly the Oklahoma City Union station platform area that had served what remained of the original 12 track area as built along with the associated underground access tunnels dissapeared several years ago as the downtown area I-40 Relocation project in OKC placed the new 10 lane interstate section right where the Frisco/Rock Island ROW and platforms had been directly behind the south side of the station. Rock Island and Frisco jointly used the OKC Union station.

My commute to and from work daily involves transiting that area of the I-40 relocation over the former location of the track and platform areas.

Union station building is located at 300 SW 7th Street in Oklahoma City and is still in use and has been inhabited by another entity for many years prior to the I-40 project.

It was in use as a passenger station following its construction and opening from 1931 until 1967. It has a 55,000 square foot main floor area it and is of California Spanish Mission revival style architecture. It was placed on the National register of historic places in May 1978.

The last Frisco passenger train thru OKC was operated in May 1967 and last Rock Island passenger train in November 1967. The station was closed soon afterward and eventually sold.

Fortunately the last section of the original platform canopies that remained at Union Station as seen in the photo from Patrick, although probably not that exact section in the picture, was saved and reused for our station platform area at the Oklahoma Railway Museum as seen here.

  8. Here are another couple of pics i took at the museum regarding the platform canopies.

This is from the north end nearest the restored Oakwood, Oklahoma Depot from the old KCM&O (ATSF) line that was moved to the museum and adjoins the brick train platform.

In the background ahead of the 2 cabooses is the ex BN, nee NP F9A that was repainted in Frisco colors, albeit retaining # 814 from its BN days of service.

The CNW car at left is an old commuter combine that functions as the car for wheelchair patrons and they board via a special lift and entering thru the baggage section doorway (shown in last pic) so they, and also those that are not able to climb the steps of the excursion cars, so they may ride and enjoy our excursion train as well. They are bench seats in combine section so family can sit in there also. The car is normally spotted so the platform canopy helps keep the area for loading with the lift out of the elements such as rain and snow.

Baggage doors of the combine remain open on nice weather days with steel safety screens for unobstructed viewing rather than trying to peer out the windows of the baggage doors.
