I was skimming through some pictures tonight when I noticed something different about GP35 SLSF 717.

I cannot tell if the glass number boards have been replaced with a sheet metal cover, or if the glass was just painted over. Either way, the rear number board area has been painted over with Mandarin orange and white paint and the number 717 is stenciled in black over it.

I have seen that this practice was popular with other roads, but I do not recall seeing any other Frisco units painted like this.

Anyone know of other units that received similar treatment?

Any known reason why the shops chose to paint the rear this way?

Probably is some form of low grade accident and it was more cost effective to simply replace with sheet metal as opposed to ordering a rear end kit from EMD.
