  3. Re: Track Scale Locations - February, 1907

I have a box of undated "Sketches of Junction Points showing Joint and Industrial Tracks and List of Industries".

They are alphabetical from Aberdeen, MS to Wister, OK.

    Unfortunately, no Bonanza.

    The logo says Frisco Lines.

    Ron,

First of all thanks again for the depot plans.

I put them on a disc and then put them away. I don't plan on misplacing them again.

Now I will be a pest once again. I would love to have copies of the sketches you mention in this thread.

    Any chance of that?

    Thanks!

Re: Track Scale Locations - February, 1907

Bonanza is an odd sort of deal, although I imagine there were a number of arrangements like this in the "early days." It has taken me some time to even start to understand the ins and outs of what was going on there. I don't believe there can be much doubt that the arrangement at Bonanza was just a small part in a much larger "scheme of things." Too many events involving the same companies occurred at about the same time.

The mine track, and there were several miles of it, at Bonanza did not originally belong to either the Frisco or the coal company, Central Coal & Coke of Kansas City, MO. It seems likely that it was built and owned by the Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf (KCP&G) Railroad. They were involved in a three way trackage deal with the Frisco and the Arkansas and Choctaw (A&C) Railway.

KCP&G owned the mine tracks, but leased them to the A&C which used trackage rights on the Frisco to deliver coal cars to and from Bonanza, AR and Poteau, IT, later Oklahoma, where they were picked up by the KCP&G.

The arrangement was in place by at least 1897 and probably from the beginning, approximately 1895. A few years later the KCP&G became the Kansas City Southern (KCS). Their 1902 annual report has a list titled "contracts and agreements affecting business." One of the contracts was: "Arkansas & Choctaw Rly. Co.: contracts provide for a rental of certain coal-mine tracks at Bonanza, Ark, property of KCS Rly. Co., to the A & C Rly. Co.: consideration $1014.78 yearly."

Frisco bought the A & C roughly around 1902 and apparently absorbed all of its Arkansas operations except the operation at Bonanza. Central Coal, which had owned the A & C, started a new railroad, the Missouri and Louisiana (M&L) which operated mostly in Missouri and Louisiana but included the old A & C coal operation at Bonanza.

This occurred at almost exactly the same time that Central Coal & Coke bought the K & T Coal Company which provided much/most of the Frisco's coal on their Northern and Central Divisions.

The 1902 Official Guide listing for the Missouri & Louisiana Railroad Co. includes: Bonanza District--Poteau, Oklahoma to Bonanza Arkansas and Hackett, Arkansas for coal traffic only." Under connections it lists "At Poteau, Okla. with Kansas City Southern Railway and Frisco System. At Bonanza with Frisco System".

Ten years later the KCS annual report: "Of the total System mileage, the following was not operated by your company during the year ended June 30, 1912: Bonanza Coal Mine Spur: Operated by Central Coal & Coke Co. under contract. Main Branch 2.79 miles. Sidings 3.62 miles."

Frisco, Central Division ETT No.15 (Dec 1906) has this notice: "Second and inferior class trains will look out carefully for Ft. S. P and W. R'y and Mo. & La. R'y trains in yard limits at Poteau, for Mo. & La. R'y trains at Bonanza and for Midland Valley R'y trains at Maney Junction."

The 1907 Frisco List of Stations has, under junction points and connections, Bonanza, Arkansas with Kansas City Southern, Poteau I.T. with Kansas City Southern, Mo & La.

All this is a rehash of previous posts, I don't know how to link to them.

This brings me to my FRISCO question.

The wye at Bonanza seems to have been consistently listed in Central Division ETT's from the early 1930's until at least 1945. In some Arkansas survey records it is identified as the Missouri and Louisiana wye at Bonanza. I don't have access to any 1920's Central Division ETT's and would love to hear from someone who does.

The ETT's would show a 37 car Frisco siding at Bonanza and "7 car other". This situation changed by the time Central Division ETT 33A was released in November 1943. That time table shows a "35 car siding and 280 car other". The 280 car length track has to be the remaining Central Mine Spur to Mine 135. Central went bankrupt 10 years earlier.

In my ETT collection I have a skip in Central Division ETT's from #34, February 1945, until #37, April 1950. On the latter ETT the wye at Bonanza is no longer shown. #37 shows "other 11" at Bonanza. #38B shows "other 47." This 1952 ETT also has the notation "All moves over Mine 135 track Bonanza restricted to 15 mph".

All this has the appearance to me of Frisco taking control of the mine tracks at Bonanza during the Second World War and then for all intents and purposes abandoning them with the end of the War.

It looks like they may have pulled them in the early 1950s?

Does anyone have an ETT or any other document from this era which would help me narrow down the date or any other information on this subject?

    Thanks,

    John

    Ron,

This box of sketches sounds like invaluable information to have scanned and posted in this forum.

I suspect that they could generate considerable discussion. I for one would be especially interested in Enid, OK. There are many others I would also love to see including but not limited to Joplin, Kansas City, Memphis, Tulsa, Wichita, etc. These are really cool items and should provide a wealth of period information at junctions both large and small.

Is there any chance this could become an addition to this site?

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks!

    Ron,

I guess it would be ironic to call your stash of drawings a real "bonanza."

I'll echo Mark's thoughts: what I wouldn't give to see these digitized and preserved.

What can we Frisco Folk do to help?

    Best Regards,
