I don't want to cause a firestorm of hate mail toward me or Frisco.org, but I wouldn't be surprised if Tom didn't fly off somewhere and is sitting on the beach with some beauty laughing his butt off at us all as he tracks our comments on his newly bought (with OUR money) iPad 5G.

Such Things do happen but if look at years he put into the photos, various train layouts, clubs, MoPac outfits, he started to slow and was like in a bad marriage where he just got too tired of being expected to do this or that on a schedule and lost the love for the hobby. Funny that his departing the scene goes hand in hand with the current big question if this remains an affordable hobby? Never met him nor know his age but could just be a mid life crisis. Yup the beach sounds fine!

In a business the size of this one, his "beach" would have to be somewhere along the side of the Kansas River.

Well, what ever that meant, it probably was kinda odd. Not nearly enough, to laugh at the beach is right. Most likely something else happened. But, I wouldn't place a order.

So 913-727-6649 no longer works for Tom?

It is sad that he is having these issues. I haven't heard anything on the MoPac site as to one way or the other if anyone has receive any of their 50% off orders.

Re: Willing To Help Oddballs Decals?

I sent Oddballs an email a couple of days ago and he responded promptly. I was inquiring about an order I had placed earlier and he said his girl friend has an Alps printer and he would get to orders in about a week. He also said he had about a month's worth or orders to process.

So reading through the now-reorganized and consolidated threads, do I take it that this guy STILL (1) is not shipping and (2) but is now at least responding to inquiries?

    Hi All:

I suspect that I'm the one that stands to lose the most investment in pre-order commitment sent in the attempt to help Odd Balls. (To wit: $502 in S scale decals, which must be printed per order.)

Though Tom has been having continual printer trouble it seems, I'm not yet willing to throw him under the bus and write him off. Suggest we all try to give him some more time to get caught up and see what gels. If I'm willing to be patient a while longer with my $502 investment in Odd Balls... hopefully you can too?

    gstout:

In answer to your questions as best I understand it...

    1. No decals have been printed/shipped for a while. Orders for existing stock is likely being filled/shipped.

    2. Tom does respond to inquiries, but the approximated delivery/completion times in said replies haven't proved to be accurate at this point.

For now, I will continue to wait for an undermined amount of time and hope for the best.

    To All:

I have been following this thread from the beginning with the following observations:

    (1) Some interest and concern (I don't want anyone to lose money).
    (2) Amusement of sorts (how many of you have actually met Tom in person?). The self-penned name of "Grumpy" well fits his personality. I truly believe he does things on his own timetable and at his own speed.

Having said that, I propose and provide my answers/conjecture to the following questions:

    (1) Does he have a girlfriend? I suppose, since he claims he does.
    (2) Has he had printer problems? I suppose, if he says he has.
    (3) Is he still in business? I truly believe he is. (See tendencies above in regards to time and speed)
    (4) Will everyone get their decals? I believe they will.
    (5) Is he a good businessman in regards to communication and customer service? You decide. Remember he calls himself "Grumpy".
    (6) Would I personally order decals from him before I see others getting theirs? NO

Not that it matters, but FF I have met Tom. Although, just from looking at his photo in his local paper from several years ago, I probably wouldn't have instantly recognized him today. Back then Oddball was more appropriate; nice guy and all, but then I don't have any $$ tied up either. I had given a great deal of thought of taking him up on his 50% off sale, but decided to back off until the dust clears.

I just hope that he is just suffering from an extreme lack of accurate bookkeeping.

I have ordered from Tom and had experienced his "grumpiness" firsthand. While it isn't a sin to be an "Oddball", taking money by deceiving your client is just WRONG. Whether Tom is or isn't having problems is beside the point. It took me over a month to get my order filled. I was in no hurry to get the decals, but I got the same story about printer problems and being way behind ...blah...blah..blah... as everyone else has gotten. My advice is to forget about Oddballs Decals, it's history. BBB can't trace his name or his business to his listed address, and he has no listed phone number for Oddballs Decals. All this secretive stuff raises a BIG red flag for me.

This is all very sad. I have done business with Tom in the past and he has always come through. I'm not ready to give up yet, either, so I think I will send an order and see what happens.

One has to wonder just how many orders he has to work on, and also what in his life is taking up his time. I don't believe that this decal business is his sole income source, and if it isn't you can bet primary job comes first over hobby.

He can be a bit of a grump, but I have also been around him when he was in a good mood. It is what it is. He is a friend of Richard Napper's and since I consider Richard a good friend (as well as an invaluable source of things Frisco), I'm willing to give Tom benefit of the doubt.

[IMG]I also think this subject has been picked over for long enough.....but that's just me.

I recently ran across a Moloco transfer caboose kit at the hobby shop. After I built it, I discovered Oddballs made the decals for it. I ordered them about a week ago and the decals arrived yesterday. If I had read this thread I might not have sent off a check, but all's well that ends well, I suppose. It's a shame for some of you who are out so much money up front. Hopefully, my receipt of decals is a sign of good things to come for you.

    Re: Odd Ball Decals

Happy to hear that the situation with Oddballs seems to be working out. Along those lines, did anyone other than me get burned when Canadian Model Trains pulled the plug a couple of months ago? I gave them a $50 deposit on a Rapido locomotive (for a non-Frisco road) which evaporated when Tom Tomblin shut down CMT. I read that brass loco's sent to CMT on consignment may have been picked-up by another Canadian company for return to their owners.

For me, pursuing $50 in Small Claims Court may not be worth it -- especially across the border.

Can laugh about that $50 if want but after buying several of larger orders he sure has taken me to dance for a mere $50 this time! If had a lawyer in group would be interesting to see what a class action suite required. Those $50 add up, in this case in his pocket. Best Wishes to All!

I am closing this thread due to the level of speculation and possible mis-information.

Until I get verifiable confirmation via PM from Andre or others that sent Tom Stolte money, no further posts are necessary.

I will post an update upon receipt of verifiable confirmation.

In the meantime, CAVEAT EMPTOR - may the buyer beware.
