Observation Car End Of Train Lighting

On observation cars like the Joseph Pulitzer, what function did the outcropping on the back roof provide?

My initial thought was a large rear-facing red light, but it also has side markers, making the center light redundant. The other thought was a rear-facing headlight for backing maneuvers at night. I have flipped through the diagrams and found no mention of it.

I have found a few photographs showing red lights mounted in the rear vestibule of non-observation cars in the absence of an observation or caboose, but I am presuming this is because those coaches were not equipped with marker lights.

I have a model I am adding at least red lights to, and want to at least try to get this right. The function of that outcropping is the difference between a lighting effects decoder and a basic rectifier setup.
