Just heard from Canadian Model Trains (CMT) that Overland has announced a MEGA RUN of Frisco International Wide Vision Cabooses. They will run cabooses in both the 200, as-delivered, number scheme and the renumbered 1200 schemes. Looks like we will be able to get cabooses in the following schemes.

I was a little surprised that they will be doing the Pullman Green caboose but I am not running Overland Models.

Bob Hoover and I have been corresponding with Brian Marsh, head of Overland, for several months. Our recommendations included doing an as-delivered scheme/number series, focus on the red cabooses that made it all the way to the acquisition of the BN ( :-O ) and skip the orange and white cabooses that seemed to only run the rails the last 2-3 years of the Frisco. Brian has apparently agreed with our suggestions and Frisco modelers will want to assess their needs and save up for these cabooses.

These cabooses should be very accurate, especially the paint. Brian used a good portion of my caboose slide collection to create his list from and will work from those photos to get the paint, lettering and numbers right.

    Ship IT on the Frisco!

    To All:

Beside what Rick mentioned, it needs to pointed out that the top of the announcement from Canadian Model Trains read:

"The models will be built to order, based on number of reservations. No extra models will be available when the models are released."

In other words, yes there are a significant number of Frisco Models listed, but they will only make what people pre-order. When Overland announced their big F-Unit project years ago, there was about every variation of every loco the Frisco ever had initially announced. In the end, they only produced three of four if my memory serves me correctly. As a matter of historical reference, the first run of painted Frisco cabooses that was done several years ago included five models, two Red, two Orange & White, and the R,W,& B #1250.

I did also suggest to Brain that the cabooses NOT have lights as the first run did, but have an NMRA decoder plug so that the rear marker lights could be lit. He seemed to welcome that thought, so we'll see.

Lastly, besides Rick's masterful job of supplying his slde collection, I also suggested to Brian that he view Mike Condren's extensive collection of Frisco cabooses on his website which he said was also very helpful, so thanks also to Mike!

In conclusion, this does go to show that we as Frisco Modelers need to be pro-active in our requests to be included in manufacturers minds when they are developing new items.

    To All:

I have contacted Brian Marsh at Overland about the omission of at least one Orange & White caboose in the list that Rick posted earlier. I reiterated to him my original input when we were working with him this past summer that the O&W paint scheme should be represented. He pointed out to me that the announcement did say that this was just the first group of road names and schemes and another one would be coming in December. If you definitely want him to make at least one or more O & W ones, I would suggest contacting him personally at bmarsh@overlandmodels.com. and express your desire that he includes these for sure in the December announcement.

Bob and I have been rather pesky with Brian especially after the Texas Special cars were announced a few years ago. He may be getting sick of us. What we need to do now is get our preorders in and see what the price is. The last run of painted SLSF cabooses (which were very nice) retailed for about $250-260 and could be purchased rather easily at a 10% discount. Since that was several years ago (2002?), my guess is that these could approach or pass $300 each. Yikes ! They are the best thing around though. When I bought mine through CMT, I had to put 10% down and then wait (and wait and wait). It gave me lots of time to save up the balance.

If anyone has the Overland Texas Special cars, I would be interested in your assessment of them. Maybe we could console each other.

    Ship IT on the Frisco!

    Chris and All:

I concur with Rick about the quality of the first run of cabooses. They were flat beautiful! The only downside was that they were lighted and the lighting flashed as the cars rolled down the track although it did show off the magnificant painted interior. Both of us and probably others cut the wires and disabled that feature. That prompted the request on our part to install an NMRA plug wnd possibly wire the red beacon on the ends of the cars so that a single function decoder such as a TCS T1 could be easily installed and therefore facilitate directional flashing lighting.

I just saw yesterday that Overland has added two road #'s (actually three sort of) to the upcoming Frisco International Caboose project.

All of these are addition to the ones that were previously announced and posted by Rick.

    AB-1563-1 Road #1205 Orange & White
    AB-1563-2 Road #1234 Orange & White

AB-1564 BN Road # 11598 ex. Frisco painted Orange & White w/white BN letters and post-merger Road #'s

Also, I did notice they are producing the following:

AB-1526-1 BN #11604 green with yellow ends and plated over side windows (former FRISCO) road #'s 1275-1284 series
AB-1526-2 BN #11607 green with yellow ends and plated over side windows (former FRISCO) road #'s 1275-1284 series

I could go back and count, but I believe there may possibly be more Frisco models being offered than any other road name except possibly BN.

It is apparent that these are going to be produced on an as pre-ordered basis with no extra stock. Also, those modelers that bugged, pestered, and sent photos to Brian Marsh at Overland got a bigger bag of goodies from Santa! The Katy guys so far only have two cabooses, both Green & Yellow. The MP & Santa Fe guys so far have gotten 7 each. Most of us can remember when it was the other way around.

P.S. As was mentioned in an earlier post, thank Rick for sending in the pictures. I just bugged and pestered.

CMT has posted the prices of the cabooses and they seem quite reasonable to me so here goes:

The MSRP is listed at $299 and the CMT price is $245 with an expected delivery of late 2009/ early 1010. If these delivery estimates follow course of past ones, it will probably be at least 6 months after that.

I have just received an update from CMT that Overland has added a bunch more RR's to their alredy large group of International Wide Vision Cabooses including #1240 in the Bicentennial Red, White, and Blue paint scheme. The Overland stock # is AB-1617-1 and the MSRP is $299. CMT's price is $245.
Some of you may remember that they did #1250 in RW&B on the first run and it was quite impressive.

Yikes! What can possibly be the point of a $299 (or $245) caboose, when there are perfectly good Athearn (HO) and Atlas (N) models around?? I guess I'm just not "getting" it!! Isn't there some better model railroad money to be spent elsewhere??

The windows on the cupolas and on the sides of the body are not correct, for starters. There has been at least one article on how to correct the widows, plus add other details (written by Mike Corley, IIRC).

Indeed, you can modify the windows, or just overlook them and paint & decal the cabooses. I have quite a few that way, but I do have one I corrected the windows on.

Some folks buy brass models for collection, some for operating on their model railroad. I am glad there are prototypical models out there, even in brass, and I'm also glad there are plastic models that can be modified to closely fit the model.

I'm with ya on the price- brass is out of my range right now. But I'm not gonna begrudge those who get 'em- I'm very glad they can.

Now, a plastic model of an International wide-vision caboose with proper side windows on the cupola would be nice.........do ya hear me, Intermountain, Kadee, etc? ;)

Yeah GLA, I don't care who buys them. But if I was spending some of that hi-dollar "disposable" income, I'd get some (maybe all) of the Glacier Park 4500's. Or some of Don Wirth's hand (re) built steamers going on eBay. I can always get an Athearn 1200 caboose...Just my preferences, nothing personal.

    Tom

PS: HOWEVER, if Overland ever makes an N scale Texas Sprcial, the shoe will be on the other foot! :)

The Atlas and Athearn cabooses are great models except that the cupola is wrong as others have stated. This is just speculation of my part, but Overland seems to have been very successful in selling these cabooses in the past. In the old days, if we wanted an accurate and highly detailed diesel we would have to buy a brass one and if it weren't a major roadname get it painted to boot. Now with the advent of highly detailed diesels from Atlas, Athearn, and others along with accurate freight cars to match the above mentioned cabooses don't match up. I am referring to etched roofwalks, see-thru grills, an separtely applied grab irons. Therefore it seems many people are willing to pay that amount for a model to match the rest of their fleet. Again just my opinion.

I wanted to bump this discussion.....is there any reliable updated news on whether OMI really intends on offering these cabs?

Yes, these cabooses are due in June 2011 per Brian Marsh of Overland. Many of us have deposited funds with dealers and placed orders. The real issue is whether any additional units will be available. I am not 100% certain on this but I think Brian is only producing what was ordered in advance. Bob Hoover and I tried to get the word out in this thread so Frisco modelers could get theirs ordered.

I will check with him in the next day or so and see if he has an update on the delivery of these cabooses.

    Rancho Bob & Others:

If you are still interested in one or more of these cabooses, click on the below link and then scroll down to the Frisco offerings (they are separated so if you are looking for either the O&W ones or the RW&B ones you need to scroll further than the other ones. When you find the one you want, then click on it and it will show the dealers that purchased that version. All of them list Overland, so Brian may have ordered a few extra and Rick will be able to update us on that. I would then start calling the dealers listed to see if they can get you one. Some of them offer discounts up to 20% so you may save by calling around to dealers first.

    Hope this helps.

They were all sold out a long time ago. The cars sometimes appear on eBay at $400 or $500 apiece! No telling what the whole trains went for. Lots of snob appeal with Overland...

Tom is correct. Plus, they usually do not do all the items they announce. They send up trial balloon announcements and then see what they receive in the way of orders, and then do the ones that are most popular. They announced all sorts of Frisco E7's and E8's but did not do them all, for example.
