FYI, I just bought a new book that appeared in the recent Ron's Books listings: American Steam Locomotives, Design and Development, 1880-1960. Hard cover, 451 pages, author is William Within, published 2019, Indiana University Press & RLHS. ISBN is 978-0-253-03933-0.

Have not read much of it, but it appears very thorough but not in overwhelming detail. Lots of b/w pictures. My only disappointment so far is the almost total lack of mention of Frisco steam power. The very thorough index notes only one listing - the fact that the Frisco was among those RR's that lined and striped their locomotives. No pictures. Thanks!

But, I think it will be a good read on steam loco design. Available from Ron online for less than $35 with his usual discounts, no shipping charge.

My stack of books to be read continues to increase!

FYI, for those of you who are interested in this book, Don Wirth has obtained a better price, by several $, than my price from Ron. Ron has been passed by from Jeff Bezos (Amazon). Check there first. I will next time!

I tried to order from Ron's, but it kept gagging on my credit card security code. I finally just gave up after trying another card. Saved ten buck by doing it.

FWIW< detailed review elsewhere have identified a number of boo-boos. I haven't started reading my copy yet because I am still on its prequel covering 1830 - `880. There are some pics/discussions of early Pacific RR engines in it.
