Two NEO cabooses are preserved #1111 and 1110. I think they use to be NEO # 55 & 56. Does anyone know if this is correct, and which was which?
Caboose SLSF 1111, ex-NEO, sitting at the Newburg Historical Society building, Newburg, MO. Pic taken around 1990. The caboose is still there, and is still in decent shape. Can anyone confirm the original NEO number for SLSF 1111? Ken More of SLSF 1111 at this link: http://www.frisco.org/vb/showpost.php?p=9451&postcount=5 klrwhizkid
You were close. NEO cabooses were numbered 54 and 55. Not sure which one was which in the renumbering to Frisco. The other NEO caboose is in Ft. Scott, KS in a park. If you drive through town on US 69, you will see it on the west side of the road.
I just saw a picture of four NEO cabooses. They appear to be numbered 53, 54, 55 and 56, although it is hard to read the numbers on the caboose most distant from the camera. I don't have rights to the picture, so I cannot post. Sorry.
Richard and Steve, The Northeast Oklahoma Railroad (NEO) owned and operated 4 home built, center copula cabooses. They were all of common design and built in 1947 at the NEO's shops in Miami, OK. The original numbers were NEO 53, 54, 55 and 56. After the Frisco acquired the NEO in 1967, the cabooses were renumbered in the 100 series. At least numbers SLSF 162 and 164 was used. The cabooses were renumbered again in 1968 due to the Frisco's new computer system. They were assigned road numbers SLSF 1110, 1111, 1164 (1st) and 1186 (1st). Hope this helps. Thanks! Mark
Mark - So, if I understand the NEO cab to SLSF numbering, NEO 53 = SLSF 162 (?) = SLSF 1110 NEO 54 = SLSF 163 (?) = SLSF 1111 NEO 55 = SLSF 164 (?) = SLSF 1164 NEO 56 = SLSF ???? = SLSF 1186 Is this correct? Ken
Ken, Unfortunately I do not have specific caboose to caboose numbering documentation on the NEO cabooses. The information I provided is based on photographic documentation. Hopefully we will be able to find more specific information to document these and other Frisco caboose numbers and renumbering. Hope this helps. Thanks! Mark
Thanks for posting a picture, cause it reminded me of one I saw on Mike's web site that had the same design. Scroll to about half way through the page. The cabooses are in order via road #. http://condrenrails.com/Frisco Catalog/Caboose.htm Come to think of it I have a caboose with that design, only with split cupola windows...
Try this link. It has a picture of all four cabooses (or cabeese). http://friscorailroad.com/cus100780.jpg
Thanks! Nice pic. Sure wish we could link each NEO cab to their SLSF numbers just for historical purposes. The only one I have ever seen is SLSF 1111 down in Newburg - I'd like to know its NEO origins (as well as the other three). Do we know where the SLSF used them? Did they use them? Ken
Ken--There's a picture of one of them (#163) in the Nick Molo book, page 123. He says the Frisco kept them around their old home territory. It's Pictured at Miami, OK. Tom
Tom - Aye, you are correct! And, I found two Mike Condren pics of SLSF 1164 sitting in Viburnum on the lead belt line. Ken
That is correct. Frisco kept the NEO engines and cabooses on NEO territory for many years. As of 1975, they were all still at NEO. The Frisco kept NEO as a quasi-seperate entity at least through the 1970's. The Northern Division timetable showed a separate trainmaster for Miami and one of the NEO officers was shown in company literature as a special assistant to the president of Frisco. NEO's offices stayed open at 4th and Main Streets at least until the 1970's. Frisco had a separate agent at the Miami station at Central and D Streets (the old passenger station on the main line). Two events changed all this. One was the closure of the lead and zinc mines through the 1960's and 1970's in the Picher area. The huge "chat" or tailings piles were sold and transported out by train. The state of Kansas bought the largest of these piles near Commerce and used the chat for road construction throughout the state. The second event was the closure of the BF Goodrich tire plant in 1987. Goodrich was the largest customer on the southern end of the NEO. They brought in carbon black and shipped out boxcars of tires. (See my posting on the NEO operations.) Until those two closures, the NEO kept two engines and two cabooses at Miami. I did not see the other two engines or cabooses much, although I'm sure they came down to Miami for servicing. NEO had a working enginehouse at 4th and D Streets in Miami for many years.
I've been chasing pics of ex-NEO Frisco cabs this afternoon - beats cleaning the basement (my orders for the day!). I have found pics of ex-NEO cabs SLSF 162, 163, 1110, 1111, 1162 and 1164. The Molo book says they were ultimately numbered 1110, 1111, 1162 and 1163. I question that, since there are two Condren pics of ex-NEO SLSF 1164. Ken
