They were found on the Athearn website, search Frisco & filter results N scale. My computer skills are pretty basic, not sure how to setup a direct link. Sorry. The releases were announced on Monday 12/14. Joe
What would be the time line (Builder's date) for this Athearn boxcar? I don't like to model after the 1964 period. Thanks, Tom
I would have to look in my book at home to be sure. I'm guessing late 60's-early 70's but I'm not sure. Charlie
I have the Nick Molo book and the cars shown in the 120xx series (12107 & 12117) are cars without roofwalks and built in the 70's--Past my modeling era. The builder's date on the Athearn cars is too small to read in their picture. Tom
My Frisco "Empire" still has passenger trains with full stripe "Racehorse" engines, cabooses, freight car roofwalks, black and yellow freight diesels, and even an occasional steam engine run... Tom PS: Anybody know the date when roofwalks were outlawed?
The cars in the pictures Charlie linked to have roofwalks. Build dates appear to be 60's, too fuzzy to tell exactly, but with high brakewheels and roofwalks, probably mid-60's. ORER? I fugure the roofwalks will come off for 1980.
On Athearns website, some cars have a feature just below the image titled "Tech & Spec". It shows a 1950 to 1980 time era. With the roofwalks it may fit your era after all. Below is latest version of "Manufactured N Scale Releases". The major changes are new additions on upcoming releases, a couple of typos & the cancellation of a Intermountain six boxcar release. Thanks Charlie for your help! Joe
Stave and Joe, Here are some time line dates you may find helpful. The Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) ruled that new boxcars, refrigerators, cabooses and similar cars ordered after 4/1/1966 and/or delivered after 10/1/1966 would not have roofwalks or high mounted brake wheels. Further, existing cars of similar design could have the roofwalks (also sometimes called running boards) removed. In some cases the side and end ladders were also shortened at the same time. Concurrently, existing high mounted brake wheels could be removed and replaced with low mounted brake wheels. On cars where the roofwalks were removed, but the handbrake wheel was not lowered (tall ladders remained at least at the "B" end), the car side was to be stenciled to indicate the removal of the roofwalk. Originally a target date was set for the removal of roofwalks on all cars not requiring them by the end of 1974. For cars in interchange service, this date was later extended to 1982. Railroads and car builders generally accepted the low mount for brake wheels on all car types in an attempt to help reduce injury from climbing, falls from heights and the extra time needed to climb higher. This did not apply to cars that required rooftop access to valves, loading doors or troughs, typically tank cars and covered hoppers. Hope this helps. Thanks! Mark
Hi, This is the New Year posting of the Manufactured N Scale Releases. A new page has been added with the same data but in a different format. It is based on equipment type and manufacturer. Please leave feedback. Your input is Greatly Appreciated! Joe
Just found an Overland brass N scale E-7 Texas Special Frisco/MKT road number 101-A from Dans Train Store on Ebay. Bidding ends on January 10, 19:54 PST. Currently, 01-05 21:54 PST, there are 8 bids at $200.81. It is too much for my budget, but thought some one may be looking for this item. Good Luck! Joe
Wow, that's expensive! I've deleted all of my old attachments to save space and here is my latest N Scale roster. Charlie
