I just picked up a Key Frisco 4000 2-8-2. It is a beautiful piece. Inside however the enclosed fact sheet is about 4200 class 2-8-2's. It looks to me to be a model of a 4000 class but now I am unsure. Is anyone familier with this model?

    Robert,

If it is a Key engine then it is a 4000 class locomotive. Hallmark brought in a version of the 4200, however it was full of discrepancies and there is a lot of difference in the appearance of a 4000 class and the 4200 class. I have seen the Key version and they are a very nice locomotive, congratulations.

I have one of the Key USRA light Mikados, and it is a nicely rendered locomotive model. The model represents a Frisco a low cab, booster-equipped engine as as it might have appeared during the 1940's. My "complaints" with this locomotive are minor. The addition of a smoke-density lamp would further enhance the appaearance of this locomotive. The Delta trailer profile is incorrect, and could be replaced with a Cal-Scale part.

The profile of the tender through the coal bunker is off ever so slightly, but the model has trim boards, which the Frisco added to increase the coal capacity of the tender. The trim boards mask the improper profile, and it's a minor flaw with which I wouldn't worry. The doghouse on the tender is riveted, and, it doesn't match the Frisco doghouse plan. Don Wirth has posted plans for an accurate Frisco doghouse on this web site should you want to build one. The tender is just about a foot too short, and again, it's a very minor flaw. The tender lacks a back-up lamp and a tool box, and those are added easily.

The 4026 looks very much like the model. http://thelibrary.org/lochist/frisco/friscoline/images/photos/p01454.jpg

Thank you Karl for your input. This will enable me to make it a more accurate model.

    Karl,

Do you have a part number for the Cal-Sacle part? Thanks
